Anyone ever been in a mental hospital?

There's this old deserted one near where I live, creepy as f*ck. The newer one of it is just as horrible, my mum worked there once when she was younger, apparently it's worse than an old folks home.

NO WAY
i lived near an abandoned one that everyone swore was haunted. used to go explore it when we were drinking... it was half collapsed, had all the beds with straps on 'em, and the lights would flicker on and off. crazy ****, man. CRAZY

****. We all do the same. Plus the one near here is just like that too. F*ckin' wet mee pants when I was there once. Creepy Loony Bin Exploring+Intoxication=Mega Bad Idea.

If you want to know what mental institutes are like, or at least used to be like, watch a film called "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest."

I have been admitted in to mental institutions twice. Once as an in-patient (I stayed there overnight) and once as an out-patient (go there during the day). Both were actually pleasant experiences, as they're meant to be. You go to these places because there is something wrong with you mentally and most competent doctors realize that an unpleasant environment is counter productive. If you've heard stories of torture and such (this isn't the sixties, dammit) there is probably some exaggerating going on OR it's a poorly run establishment.

It depends on where you get admitted. There are good places and bad places. The ones that are privately funded tend to be better than the ones the local authority has to keep running.

My Mum works in a mental hospital. Granted it's a smaller one, more of a house than a hospital. She says the patients are pretty comfortable there apart from the odd outburst. I think it's better for the patients to be in a scaled down enviroment such as that though, they get the attention they need quickly and it's more cosy than a hospital ward.

I'd agree with that - there are some places which have a high staff turnover and a very over-stretched psychiatrist or two with up to 50 people requiring a lot of care and attention; usually, it's the care and attention that is lacking and what they don't have in staff resources they make up for with mood suppressants.

I visited someone in a private (and therefore horrendously expensive) mental hospital in London a few times - ok, so it was a secure unit and even the cups were chained to the tables to prevent them becoming weapons - but the staff took the time to care for the patients and they handled things calmly, politely and firmly. And as a result patients weren't in there for very long - which is ideal, really.

Essentially, yes. Albeit a plastic one (they aren't allowed any other materials - not even cans of drink).

One thing that did baffle me about that place was that the furniture was bolted to the floor as well - I couldn't see anyone being able to lift an entire three piece suite quickly enough to clobber someone without being caught first...

I once thought about admitting myself, I was being dramatic, I got over myself and figured it out.
From what I hear about the mental hospitals around here is they aren't half bad, like a luxury prison with more lavender candles. If I ever decided to duck myself in for whatever reason, I would not be terrified of it. None the less, I hope that you can handle your this without the help of a hospital, but don't be afraid.

Without going into any detail I was admitted to one institution for 3 days. It was one large room where everyone sat and slept in a reclining chair. It made me feel crazy. I though to myself, surely this isn't how they all are? Recently I've wanted to check in to one, but if they are like the one I was admitted to I would go truly insane and I don't think I would ever return to normal.

How do you get admitted as outpatient? Is there a procedure? Can you request that?
