With Bioware's Mass Effect 3 being pushed back until next year it seems we shall have to wait until the conclusion of the Mass Effect series. However Bioware's Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka have been discussing the very, very broad possibilities for the future of the Mass Effect franchise. They have even gone as far as detailing the ways in which they can further the franchise.
Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka had the following to say about it...

Certainly the setting has really resonated with people, the type of aliens in the world, the type of people that inhabit space. Obviously we focus first and foremost on nailing it on this game, and then, you know, the possibilities in the future are very, very broad. We want to make sure it's awesome [Mass Effect 3] is our first focus. Beyond that, we do have a desire to continue the Mass Effect franchise, and we're working on the details, figuring out what the fans want, figuring out the right way.
What ways would you like them to continue the franchise or would you like it to end at Mass Effect 3?

I'm fine with a prequel, and a few spinoffs. They clearly have more than enough material to work with within the large universe of Mass Effect. However, the thought of a Mass Effect 4 gives an unpleasant feeling in my stomach.

They've always said that the trilogy wouldn't be the end of it, since before the release of the second game. :O

Pretty much agree with Giki. If Sheperd defeats the Reapers, the franchise will suffer from Superman Syndrome. They wont be able to create a significant enough challenge for him to overcome. They'd either have to use a different character or do a prequel.

A prequel about Anderson would be cool. Get to go on that infamous mission with Saren.

A prequel seems to be a popular idea and i can see what you mean about creating a significant threat after Mass Effect 3 (if its a happy ending).
