I found this on the CoD wiki. Might not be true, but they banned one of their own admins for not following the rules, so I trust them.

The Federal Department of Media Harmful to Young Persons also received an "urgent request" to ban all international versions of the game based upon the "Nazi content". Video games are not treated as art in Germany, thence Black Ops is classified as propagation of Nazi-ideology.

I'm sorry, but at what point is there any material in Black Ops thats supports Nazi ideology? I would like other peoples opinions on this, particually anybody from germany. I understand cutting that material from the game, I would too if my country had suffered that, but to call it propagation is going a bit too far.

**** Germany.

Interpret that as you will.

Rumor, clear and simple, also: Heil Hitler.

From what I understand, Germany goes a bit China when it comes to bits of their history they'd rather not talk about...

You should see Japan and Italy. A friend of mine went to italy, and they conveniently have 1930 to 1945 missing from their museums and textbooks.

In case the game really has been banned, I find it hilarious that they want to remove a 'fascist influence' by removing it in a way that is quite fascist.

The term clutching at straws would seem to apply here.

honestly? Basically, since there are swastikas in the game when you play black ops, that for some reason shows that the game supports Nazism.

"Video games are not treated as art in Germany, thence Black Ops is classified as propagation of Nazi-ideology."

This means that since video games have no art in them [according to the Germans] that it is not showing art in the game but instead it is supporting Nazism. This is stupid.

Supports Nazism? We're slaughtering Nazi Zombies, where's the link there?

Germany is actually really hardassed about this. Pretty much any representation of Nazi symbols they jump on with both feet. Irrespective of context, yes. I have no idea if, in this specific case, that has happened.

Also, calling this fascist is a little ridiculous. Yes, it's a very stringent application of the principle, but hate speech is, at least in the US, one of the exceptions to our free speech policy. The fact that this is a very rigid, zero-tolerance kind of "hate speech" doesn't really make it fascist. Also, the phrasing there of "international versions" implies that there's a German version that does not have swastikas and such, which is pretty standard from what I know. And... banning import versions of a specific game also doesn't seem exceptionally fascist.
Of course, they also still use the same cross for the Bundeswehr that the Wehrmacht used. So, [shrugs].

That's just unfair. The Germans don't have an entirely clean record, but the reason that they come down so hard on swastikas and most of those other symbols is because they try to remember. They make a point of it. I hadn't heard of Italy doing stuff like that, but yes, Japan is pretty well known for trying to... minimize their responsibility.

^In response to this, somebody is requesting that all imports of the game are banned. I said that I understand that Germany gets rid of Nazi symbols, but that to ban all games for their personal views, as understandable as they are, is a bit facist. And yes Italy does block out parts of its history.

I can't see how Black Ops or any COD game for that matter could possibly be accused of supporting Nazi ideology, haven't we spent the last 5+ years slaughtering them in COD games?

Government censorship organisations have to understand that depiction =/= edorsement.

No. No, it's not. They are not banning the game. They are banning the swastika. They require that foreign editions of the game, with the fully be-swastikaed Nazis, not be sold within Germany. They do allow the serial-numbers-filed-off swastika-less Nazis Which have been made in the past. And presumably exist for this game. Slaughtering Nazis instead of slaughtering Generic Badguy Types doesn't seem like it would make the game any more fun.

That's not the point. It's not entirely rational, no, but they go for a zero tolerance deal. Easier to ban the symbol in all contexts than have to go through and judge whether a usage is appropriate.

It's a pretty fascist thing to do to ban the Hindu symbol for the evolution of the universe. It's also pretty ironic considering they're trying to distance their association with a fascist regime by using censorship.

Yes, of course. One of the cheapest and most predictable storyline ever, that could be based on a lot of war movies of the last decade which offers just one level that shows actual Nazis... Supports Nazism.

Who the heck makes such deductions? Seriously -- don't people have a brain or something? Is this information actually true? Perhaps it's just another wikia trash can information.

Any country that has a "Federal Department of Media Harmful to Young Persons" is seriously effed up.

Srsly.

Well they very careful about the stuff they put out or that can be associated with them, for example their national anthem is Deutschlandlied- which for most of their history they used all the verses, now they have removed the first and second, mostly because it emphasizes German superiority.
