Bored, so I made this thread :Debate Thread:

The forums have been dead lately and I have been more bored than normal. So I made this thread. Its going to be a debate thread where we will debate over a topic until one side wins. It will work like this. I or someone else will think up a topic and then people will choose sides, either pro or con. If there is an uneven number of people on one side then too bad, prepare to hold your own against a majority (man do I know what that feels like). So here we go, first topic.

The Death Penalty

pick sides, all you do is post "pro" or "con". I will be the debate master and add facts/some opinions to both sides because I am hated by enough people on this site already.

Okay, start choosing.

Con:
Angel

Pro: Tsuyu

Re: Bored, so I made this thread :Debate Thread:

I pick con.......

and you are not hated.

Re: Bored, so I made this thread :Debate Thread:

Pro...kill 'em all and let god sort 'em out.

I couldn't agree with you more Tsuyu, but I also couldn't agree with Angel more either. See, I'm not offending anyone.

Re: Bored, so I made this thread :Debate Thread:

You could try agreeing less and then you have more agreement left for others?

Re: Bored, so I made this thread :Debate Thread:

pro... cause everybody will die later, death penalty just makes life shorter

Re: Bored, so I made this thread :Debate Thread:

Pro. Death penalty is the last thing that makes this country awesome. I miss the good 'ol days of the electric chair, gulliotine and hangings. Lethal injection is lame.

Re: Bored, so I made this thread :Debate Thread:

Pro!!!

Re: Bored, so I made this thread :Debate Thread:

How bout burning the death convicts alive...

Re: Bored, so I made this thread :Debate Thread:

Why is everyone so cruel?

Me, personally, because the Swedish justice system lets rapists and pedophiles out in the street before you can say "guilty".

Re: Bored, so I made this thread :Debate Thread:

Con, because putting the people who get such sentences into super solitary confinement 23 hours of the day is worse. Though if you ask me, it ought to be 24.

Re: Bored, so I made this thread :Debate Thread:

I just think they should spend every waking minute of their lives being confronted with what they've done...why make it easy and let them end it all?

WoW... Glad I live here in the USA. I live in California though, all these hippie protestors saying someone doesn't deserve to die even though they killed 3 productive members of society. Line em' up and shoot em' down.

Oh, yeah also start the debate. Angel I guess you are outnumbered. Sorry, but good luck!

Re: Bored, so I made this thread :Debate Thread:

con- death is only fun when i cause it

Re: Bored, so I made this thread :Debate Thread:

Gotta say, here in the UK, people spend longer in prison for failing to pay their TV licence and Council Tax bills.....now that is the criminal thing

Re: Bored, so I made this thread :Debate Thread:

So who is kicking off this debate then? And yes, I am well aware that I am totally outnumbered and gonna get shot down...metaphorically speaking, of course

Re: Bored, so I made this thread :Debate Thread:

Since I am the debate master (yes that sounds like what everyone is thinking) I will start it off.

Con death penalty state your case.

Re: Bored, so I made this thread :Debate Thread:

Eh...why do I allow myself to get into these things??

Ok, well firstly I do not see how hiding behind the "law" disguises the fact that the death penalty is still murder. You can dress it up any way you want, but it is the taking of another's life. A basic violation of human rights - yes, they have violated that by murdering an innocent, but how does that make it ok for the law to commit the same crime? And please don't give me all that "eye for an eye" crap coz if you're gonna go down the biblical route, you really are picking the wrong person to try and argue your point with. If someone commits murder or another atrocity worthy of the death penalty, then there are other ways of making them pay. As has already been mentioned, solitary confinement is one of the most awful things a human being can experience because it affects their mind more than anything else - inmates on life sentences experience all kinds of serious mental disorders. We are made to interact and forcing someone to spend almost every moment of their lives away from other people is actually a huge punishment. Death releases people - so many people who have been taken to their death by electric chair or gas or lethal injection have shown little or no remorse for what they have done - death is their release and half the time they start going on about how they've converted to some religion and if that is the case then why let them go to paradise or wherever? And what if you get it wrong? What if the person you have just put to death is actually innocent? It does happen and I'll bet more frequently than we hear about.

And I'm guessing we are referring to the death penalty in America moreso than anywhere else, right? There are a growing number of states that are re-evaluating their stance on capital punishment and the growing concern over the problems with lethal injection is causing the number of death penalties issued to decline. And think of the cost to the taxpayers? In New Jersey alone, the cost between 1983 and 2005 was $253 million - could that money not have been better spent somehow? It is significantly cheaper to commit prisoners to life without parole.

The death penalty also has links with racism - Amnesty Internationals findings are as follows:
* Even though blacks and whites are murder victims in nearly equal numbers of crimes, 80% of people executed since the death penalty was reinstated have been executed for murders involving white victims.
* More than 20% of black defendants who have been executed were convicted by all-white juries.
If it was the other way around, do you honestly think there would be as many convictions? And the death penalty is mainly given to men and not women - sexist as well as racist, eh?

Tired myself out now - will argue more later.... :)
