I'm currently replaying Crono Trigger and do you know what I'm thinking to myself?
Why are there no more RPGs like this one? The only one to come out in recent memory is Golden Sun for the GBA (love that game). Now the only "JRPG style" games have crazy graphics, but what if i don't want that? You may be saying "well, that's current-gen. Games are more sophisticated now."
Sure, we are capable of making it look prettier, but is that really better? Just because we can make a special effects bananza film doesn't make a classic Hitchcock any less gripping. If people could start making serious retro-style games (not those iphone app games or simplistic indie games from XBL marketplace) I would be willing to pay top-dollar for it. Bethesda's western open-world RPGs are breathtaking, but that doesn't mean i have to be in the mood to play it if i want an RPG.
Spice things up a little and start making a few with SNES and PS-style graphics.
We miss them. More emphasis on quirkiness and puzzle design, less on how incredible you can make the anime-hair react to a gust of wind.
Examples of games I would like to see more like:
Super Mario RPG
Crono Trigger
Final Fantasy III, VII, and VIII
Legend of Dragoon
Golden Sun
Thank You.
