I'm currently replaying Crono Trigger and do you know what I'm thinking to myself?
Why are there no more RPGs like this one? The only one to come out in recent memory is Golden Sun for the GBA (love that game). Now the only "JRPG style" games have crazy graphics, but what if i don't want that? You may be saying "well, that's current-gen. Games are more sophisticated now."

Sure, we are capable of making it look prettier, but is that really better? Just because we can make a special effects bananza film doesn't make a classic Hitchcock any less gripping. If people could start making serious retro-style games (not those iphone app games or simplistic indie games from XBL marketplace) I would be willing to pay top-dollar for it. Bethesda's western open-world RPGs are breathtaking, but that doesn't mean i have to be in the mood to play it if i want an RPG.

Spice things up a little and start making a few with SNES and PS-style graphics.
We miss them. More emphasis on quirkiness and puzzle design, less on how incredible you can make the anime-hair react to a gust of wind.

Examples of games I would like to see more like:
Super Mario RPG
Crono Trigger
Final Fantasy III, VII, and VIII
Legend of Dragoon
Golden Sun

Thank You.

I do miss the top down camera, 2D RPG's and arcade's are a dying breed. :'(

Xbox Live has many great arcade games both 3D and 2D to choose from alot of them new.

I know theyre good too because of the price Im not willing to pay for a 2D game.

if you know of any 2D RPGs on XBL marketplace of the same length and caliber as the above mentioned, do share.

castle crashers doesn't count, i miss my pixels.

Golden Sun: Dark Dawn was released for the DS very recently. I suggest you look into it.

I don't think Pokemon applies. They upgrade the graphics and there really isn't story to a pokémon game. It's a grindfest with boss battles and rivals (not that that's bad, i still enjoy playing some red version every once and a while).

Golden Sun looks promising, but i do not own any handheld systems except for my GameBoy Color (original transparent purple, oh yeah)

let me be clear: i want more games with retro graphics. I want games where they can't say "sure, the story is cliché and there is no innovative platforming, but the graphics are GREAT!"

So really, i'm complaining about two different things that have changed, I suppose. and i don't see why someone can't make a game like that again. You could take as long as you wanted designing length and depth of story and gameplay since the coding is so basic in comparison and there is no need to keep up with the cutting edge.

^ was a nice throwback when it came out, but it came out 9 years ago :(

wouldn't call it an RPG either, really. Action RPG maybe but it had more in common with the old Zelda games than anything else. in terms of gameplay, that is... i don't remember coming across a single puzzle in LoG.

Well, I was talking mostly about the LoG series rather than just the first game. LoG 2 and Buu's Fury both have some side quests, multiple characters to play as, and free roam. They're not much newer than LoG 1, but if you're looking for lower quality graphics, you're going to have to go for older games.

Breath of Death VII: The Beginning. It's an indie game on the XBLA.

Seriously.

looks fun and well worth $1. only gripe from what i can tell is that it's pretty short.

thanks. i'll check it out.

I suggested that. Lol. Breath of Death VII and Cthulhu Saves the World.

chrono trigger = Ahead of it's time.

I'm constantly looking for games like that. we just bough one for the DS that's pretty close. I'll post the title later. It looks super fun. :)

Chrono Trigger was so beast. I remember buying it for the SNES back in the day for $60 USD and that was ON SALE. Lolol.

A few games a lot of you kids might not know of, but were really good, are:

Legend of Dragoon
Xenogears (Not that gay Xenosaga bullshit)
Albert Odyssey
Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete
Lunar 2: Eternal Blue (The Silver Star Story, in my opinion, was a lot better than Eternal Blue; However, what made this game extremely fun for me, was it takes place 50 - 100 years after the Silver Star Story, so you end up running into characters you played in Silver Star Story, along with seeing things that YOU did and the changes you made in the world in the Previous game).

OMFG! How could I forget! If any of you have a Sega Saturn, you MUST get Dragon Force. That game is Epic beyond its years.

Dragon Force! GET IT!

I love Legend Of Dragoon. While some of the voice over is y'know.....crappy. "VOLCANO!"

I absolutely utterly love that game. Amazing and wish it had a sequal...Which would be equally amazing.

Also that game I was talking about earlier was Zenonia. Looks really fun. White Howler's been playing it.

true that. i always thought it was a waste of a fantastic sequel when they never followed it up with a game about the dragon campaign.

the cheesy voice overs would have to stay though, it just would not be the same without them.

though i have to say, they added it to the PSN marketplace. before starting work on Marvel vs Capcom 3, they added the originals to an online marketplace to see how interested people were. and (not to get my hopes up or anything) there are whispers of an unveiling within the next year... but you never know. just because it's the most demanded sequel i've ever seen does not mean that they will ever listen.

Yeah plus the developers were sony. Unless they sold it off to someone else, or someone else wanted to pick it up. D:
