We have had one before and it made the threads and posts decrease as people would just ask things there. Not a wise move for a forum to have a feature that encourages less posting and activity. Also they look kind of tacky and cheap and take away from the professional styled look we like to try and have.

The problem we would have is people using the chat function and nothing else - the forum would essentially die. A lot goes into making this place as successful as it is and those things which people reckon will make it more fun would actually dig a forum-shaped grave instead.

Is a chat box even available? And maybe you could put a limit to how many times you could use it a day... Or need special privileges to access it, like a post amount exceeding "x" amount of posts, or even a user title. The idea is good, but the results could lead to the alternative of death to the boards, as stated by Angel, or someone else, I'm too lazy to go back a page.
