Forgive me for posting a thread that asks people to "attack" someone, but we've just had hundreds of pounds worth of work done by a guy called Aston. He ripped us off and refuses to come back and fix his work or give a full refund. We're contacting Trading Standards but think a more direct approach could help too.

So if you're in the UK and have any spare credit/free calls, and feel like protesting, call (removed) and tell him he's a scammer, cowboy builder, or any other string of accurate descriptions you care to think of. (removed) or (removed) also work.

If any mods want to close this thread I understand completely, and sorry in advance.

Thanks :)

I thought you were paying him to build a cowboy.

And I'd call, but international calls are expensive n ****.

I'm not familiar with the term either, it had me imagining a purchasable kit for building skimpy cowboys.

Well, I personally don't see fit to close this, so I'm not going to touch anything. I'd suggest contacting Trading Standards though first before making any other moves.

I see.. well at least it gets attention :P

Thanks Gikoku, we're taking pictures and stuff right now and contacting trading standards on monday because that's the soonest it'll be open.

Let us know how contacting trading standards goes, Shirosaki. It's always a real bitch when stuff like this happens.

Though not very much related, I bought a guitar pedal for £150 with a 6 month warranty. It broke down 3 months in, only for the guy to leave the country so I'm stuck with it and no one has a bloody clue how to fix it. Not much I can do about that, but certainly contact them about this.

Will do, it wont be until Monday though ^_^

Damn that's awful, is there not a local music shop that could take a look at it for you?
THANK YOU SO MUCH.

I'ma be prank callin' tonight :troll:
Happy hunting :P

Should contact the show Cowboy Builders and report him. Get Dom Littlewood on his ass.
Don't Get Done Get Dom haha, not only that but my friend's stepdad just came over and fixed a £215 job in 5 minutes for free with a screwdriver and a box of matches.

Had to take out the numbers there - sorry about that but I have no idea what kind of poopstorm we could invite by posting that sort of info even though I'm sure it's readily available elsewhere. I feel your pain - we were ripped off by cowboys a couple of years ago and they took over a grand of our money and didn't do the job. Turns out they piggyback off other genuine companies by leeching from their websites and diverting phone calls to proper builders to their own mobiles. They're not allowed to advertise their company so they steal from legit people to get business...

If anyone wants the phone numbers for Shirosaki's cowboys, I'm sure he won't mind PMing them to you - I just don't want anyone getting into trouble for posting what could be considered sensitive data if anyone were anal enough to make an issue out of it.

Haven't heard cowboy builder before but I get the meaning behind it. I've heard people of the sort referred to as gypsies though. I'm familiar with a good number of scams and cons but this sort is always low, and I'm sorry this happened to you.

One that I fell victim to, indirectly, I was working briefly at a charity, they wanted to put together a website. Flashy guy comes around, says he could put one together for $1000 (discount rate for charities). Despite my protests, they spent the money and got a website template full of typos and broken links. Couldn't find the guy again to complain about, but another dude comes saying he can replace the crap site with a flash site. $700 base rate plus $100 per "page". Again I protested, but they paid him. And fired me because they couldn't afford me anymore. Those two guys are in my top ten lowlifes I had ever encountered, taking advantage of the ignorance and lack of resources (like a consultant) of charities and churches. They've been doing it a while too. But unlike your scenario, they did the work (if ripping off free templates can be considered work), it was just grossly overpriced and being sold to people who didn't know any better.
Aw that sucks, and it's especially low to do that to a charity.
Been to 6 different places and none of them have a bloody clue. It's incredibly frustrating.
Ah I see, is it like a custom job or something? :/

I completely understand, no worries. That sounds even worse, and hard to track. The guys we're dealing with gave a us a business card with where they're based written on it so fortunately they can't completely disappear.

Trading standards will be a good idea anyway - they'll probably suggest writing a formal letter to the guy in question and sending it recorded delivery or whatever, keeping a copy for yourself. This bloke probably won't reply but it doesn't matter, you just need to show you've tried reasonable means of contacting him. Keep an itemised phone bill too and all emails, if you've sent any. Then TS can advise what the next step is and can sort out possible grounds for legal proceedings if need be. Our cowboys are just untraceable so there was nothing we could do...but it was a lesson learned if nothing else. We're getting more building work done at the moment and we're using an expensive but reputable, traceable and contactable company for it - if nothing else, we can rain hell down on them if they even think of deviating from the contract we have.

I haven't forgot about this, I'll keep you all posted. My mum is just being weird, saying she'll call TS when "the time is right."
