he did not say this in public, he didn't go on his show saying it, he didn't go saying it to a black person and verbally attack them
he said it to his son in what he believed was a private setting
I can understand why people would not approve of those views or be happy to hear that he seems to hold them, but I do not understand why he needs to apoligize for speaking frankly to his son in private
there are lots of things that people say in private that they would not say in public, usually becuase they are inappropriate for some reason, either because they are offensive, stupid, romantic in nature, whatever...
