Dr. Kawashima is a fraud! :0
(Im sure that title got your attention, drooling DS-fanboys.)
I read an article on slashdot about all these brain-training games and the whole brain-fitness thing that's going on right now.
But guess what? They're wrong!
According to the /. article, the "front" part of your brain is the part that keeps track and lets the rest of the brain work together. A kind of meastro in an orchestra, or DNS-servers on the internet. Whatever works for you.
Now, this part of the brain has been seen VERY developed among certain groups in the population, such as painters, firefighters and comedians. This is because their brains is forced to new experiences all the time (new paintings, colours, new jokes, new stages etc.) and therefore parts of the brain develop new "Neurons" (like the intertubes of the brain) to handle these new "ways" the information gets processed and passed around different centras in the brain.
Conclusion:
Chess is good, and DS Brain Training is good. But only to a certain extent, because after a while you get good at these games and then your brain won't develop any new neurons.
So how do we keep our brains from slowly nerf;ing themselves? (Which they do after you pass 29 years)
Do stuff like brushing your teeth with the left hand (or right hand). Look for patterns in the clouds, try to memorize numbers (car license plates, road signs..) and so on and forth with weird and totally useless things.
The result is a load of neurons that you won't need generally, but when you face situations where your brain is stressed (emergencies, difficult mathematical problems) the extra neurons are used to reduce the overall "load" on your brain.
So, what do you think?
