Bioware today confirmed that Dragon Age 2, a sequel to last year's hit action RPG Dragon Age: Origins, is in the works. While a release date was not given, EA had previously confirmed an untitled Dragon Age product was due out in the first quarter of next year. Furthermore, an insert into the packaging for Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening strongly hinted the sequel would arrive in North America on February 1, 2011.

Dragon Age 2 is set over a 10-year period, according to Bioware. It will see the player transform their character from "a destitute refugee to the revered champion of the land," with new combat mechanics for the game's three classes as well as "an entirely new cinematic experience." As had previously been confirmed for the 2011 untitled project, Dragon Age 2 will be coming out for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.
Dragon Age: Origins shipped in November 2009 to critical acclaim, and was followed in March of this year by the Awakening expansion pack. It also received a number of smaller paid-for DLC expansions.
BioWare has several major projects in the works in addition to Dragon Age II. The highly anticipated Star Wars: The Old Republic massively multiplayer online game is slated for release next year, and the firm still has to wrap up its sci-fi space opera trilogy with Mass Effect 3.
Dragon Age 2 has not yet been rated by the ESRB or PEGI.

Dragon Age II Seems Like It Will Be Very DifferentThe first details we saw about Dragon Age 2 were not shocking. New game, new hero. The second batch of details? Consider the eyes of Kotaku raised.
Over on the official Dragon Age 2 webpage, we've got ourselves some sequel details to ponder:
* Embark upon an all-new adventure that takes place across an entire decade and shapes itself around every decision you make.
* Determine your rise to power from a destitute refugee to the revered champion of the land.
* Think like a general and fight like a Spartan with dynamic new combat mechanics that put you right in the heart of battle whether you are a mage, rogue, or warrior.
* Go deeper into the world of Dragon Age with an entirely new cinematic experience that grabs hold of you from the beginning and never lets go.
* Discover a whole realm rendered in stunning detail with updated graphics and a new visual style.
"Updated graphics"? Cool. Graphics were not very good in Dragon Age 1.
"New visual style"? What's that mean? Probably not the 3D Dot Game Heroes visual style, at least.
"Dynamic new combat mechanics that put you right in the heart of the battle"? Hmm. The PC version of Dragon Age 1 (really called Dragon Age: Origins) allowed gamers to play from an overhead perspective, either pausing the action or playing in realtime. The console versions only allowed the game to be played from more of a behind-the-character perspective. The phrasing here implies a closer combat perspective, no?
Dragon Age II Seems Like It Will Be Very Different
Here are some plot details:
You are one of the few who escaped the destruction of your home. Now, forced to fight for survival in an ever-changing world, you must gather the deadliest of allies, amass fame and fortune, and seal your place in history. This is the story of how the world changed forever. The legend of your Rise to Power begins now.
