Dupe or Necro

As you might have noticed, the amount of necros these days is extremely high compared to previews months, I think it's because of the search button but let's leave that for now.

So, without actually considering the rules, tell me, what do you prefer:

A Necro or a Dupe?

Re: Dupe or Necro

John pretty much sums up my thoughts about this matter. However, a bit different. Most of the places I moderate or am member of, keep themselves to a strict policy (e.g. FileFront as the prime example). One, which does have a bumping limit (several factors are taken into account), and disallows extreme variants of 'necro'ing' threads. This basically means that people should use the search function with care before bothering to post a duplicate thread. However, if the last post's dates back to 2003, for instance, it's better to create a new thread. Sticky threads don't have a bumping limit.

I'm personally fond of that idea myself. I'd also have to say that nothing is wrong with the search function of vBulletin itself. It's the people that use them, are doing it wrong. If you can search effectively, you'll find that there's no problem in locating the thread that you were searching for. Of course the use of tags play a minor factor in this, but it all comes down to using search efficiently.

That said, my vote remains neutral, and thus won't vote at all. I just wanted to post my opinion.

Re: Dupe or Necro

If a thread hasn't been answered correctly and/or still serves a purpose, I'm not seeing any trouble in it being Necro'd. That's why I voted it.

Re: Dupe or Necro

i prefer dupes, mainly for the reasons stranger said.
if the old one is disregarded, a whole new perspective could be brought to light on the same subject.

;) Exactly, if someones just looking for an answer, and not nessicarily looking to discuss the subject. The search funtion is the best and easiest way to get what your looking for. Granted, sometimes it's hard, but that all depends on what kind of key words you look for. Otherwise--
However, if the last post's dates back to 2003, for instance, it's better to create a new thread.
It would be better to make a new thread, to shed some new opinions on the matter. An nope, necroing stickied threads is completely okay. That's why they're stickied. ;) +rep!

Re: Dupe or Necro

Necro posting is much better than creating a duplicate thread. There's nothing wrong with posting in an old thread unless of course you're replying to someone who hasn't posted in years. But that doesn't mean someone else can't come along and comment on that, besides, it takes up less space when just using the same old thread again and again.

I say create a new thread, and maybe link to the old thread if its relevant.

Why wouldn't it be relevant? To dupe is to duplicate which is to create an exact copy of something else. So yes, I believe the older thread would be just as important and relevant as the newer one.

Re: Dupe or Necro

There's nothing wrong with that. If you have half a brain you can very easily discern what is new and isn't and even if you can't there's always the option of asking thought it seems that's too much for some people, heh.

Still, linking to old information might actually be a nice way to reminisce about what could have been and what has been.

Re: Dupe or Necro

Hm... I guess I can agree that it's mostly situational but still, I find necro-posting considerably better than duplicate threads.

I don't recall saying it wasn't relevant.

the subject of the original post may be, but the posts that follow can really go in any direction.

unless it's, as stranger so eloquently put, something like "where is the daichi located in fable 2" or even something non fable related such as "how many votes did barack obama win the democratic primaries by in 2008?"
those threads are static. no matter how you face it, there is only one right answer, and therefore anything short of trolling or purposely derailing it will end the same way. versus a thread such as the abortion thread, which is dynamic. we have new members here all the time with various opinions and backgrounds.
if 2 years from now many of them wanted to discuss abortion, i don't think there would be anything wrong with that.

That thread is pretty much at the bottom of the intellectual barrel and is as pointless as a debate on religion.

Those threads, yes. The other threads, not so much. Anyways, I don't really feel like continuing this. It's just one of those things that doesn't hold my interest for very long.
