Epic Mickey 'merges Mario, Zelda, Deus Ex'

When it came to making Epic Mickey, Junction Point Studios' co-founder, Warren Spector had quite an ambitious goal.

"I started this project wanting to merge the best of adventure games, such as Zelda, platform games, such as Mario, and my own games, such as Deus Ex," he told our colleagues at Edge.

It's a big ask, but Spector implies that influences from these massive titles comes through in three different types of location; quest maps, travel maps and action maps.

"The quest map is where you talk to people, learn about quests and get clues about how to solve them," he said.

"The action map is a place where you go and actually use what you have learned - its all action all the time, and you expect to encounter enemies, and maybe even some friends."

Of course Epic Mickey is also all about interacting with your environment and Mickey can find sketches in the world and make them real.

"They all have multiple uses," says Spector. "They're like the tools in the Zelda games - in a Zelda game you basically use the tools for one purpose in the places the designers tell you to use them. You can use our tools anywhere."

Epic Mickey gameplay footage was released earlier this month so you can have a look at how all this works in practice.
