Ive been playing a handful of RTS games on my laptop recently and was looking into others to try out so I was wondering what peoples favourites are...

My favourites over the years have been (in no particular order):

Age of Empires II
Age Of Mythology
Command & Conquer (multiple titles)
Warcraft III
Settlers II
Dune

I know one game people are going to suggest but I shall wait for someone to suggest it first to see if im right.

Age of Empires: Rise of Rome is amazing. <3
Starcraft/II, obviously.
Warcraft II
More recently, Revenge of the Titans, if you like turret defense games.

That was the expansion to the original AOE was it not?

It was, but they made so many tiny tweaks that is almost played like another game. For example: in the first AoE, you couldn't queue units. You click the units, it would start producing, and you would have to wait for it to be done before you could decide what you wanted next.

Also, before the expansion, there were no unit controls. Just selecting and right clicking. :X

Trying to remember back and I remember little bits here and there, didnt properly start playing the series until AOE II, though I did own the original.

I still own AoE2, but Windows 7 refuses to run it properly. The colors are all strange. :(

Which is weird, because the original runs fine.

The one genre I've never properly gotten into before, but really want to. Problem is, I have no idea where to start, but would love some help.

Always wanted to play Star Craft II, but its GPU melting bug drove me away (I'm sure it's been fixed by now). Played a few RTS demos back on the PS1/PS2 and found myself getting addicted until I fell back into other genres.

I have it too and it runs fine on Vista. Your talking about this issue right?

Command & Conquer series is a good place to start as they are forgiving for beginners on the lower difficulties. That bug was patched fairly quickly from what I read.

I actually think the first Starcraft would be an excellent starting point. It's cheap and is still a great game and will get you used to the SC2 universe. <3

I hadnt played either just assumed it wouldnt be that easy to step into being as its always been hailed by the hardcore RTS crowd. Was based around nothing more than assumption though and I do want to try them myself.

Shogun: Total War - probably the only RTS that's ever held my attention, just because it's just plain awesome. The best moment in the game is the numerous times your wife bares you an heir. Every time it popped up I'd be laughing my head off.

Always been interested in the Total War series but always puts me off when people mention the turn based combat and such. Not entirely sure how it works as I havent played it but ive watched and read a lot of reviews.

Hah, well, I remember never enjoying the combat either. But honestly, combat aside - the game is total win.

Id have thought the combat was a key thing in a real time strategy game, thats one of my deciding factors into if I purchase the game.

EDIT Only game that I stepped out of this ideal was The Settlers II, that had totally different style to most RTS games I play and I enjoyed it none the less so guess I can actually see what you mean.

Well aside from the combat, there's a lot of other factors. You develop your economy to help in your arts of war and build trade relationships. Not to mention you can also spy on and assassinate your rivals. And as I mentioned, the little random occurrences of when your wife bares you a child. Eventually once your Shogun passes away, one of your heirs takes their place. So basically, your wife breeds you game lives.

Actually does sound quite interesting, I like games that take things a little deeper than the obvious click here to fire at these units - click here to move units etc. I think the demo is still lying around on some websites so I may give it a try, thanks for the suggestion.

Age of Empires: Age of Kings took my RTS virginity and our love is still strong. Age of Mythology is awesome because it has vikings!
