Expanding Rep Function

sooo, i was just thinking about a feature that would be pretty cool to have on the forums. of course, it isn't necessary but it would be an interesting thing you could use to kill time.

every post can recieve a certain degree of rep, no? i was just thinking
A) it would be pretty neat if the number of times a post has been repped (without naming who repped it) could be viewed by registered users (or maybe just gold supporters, who knows)
or
B) modifying the search function and/or adding a leaderboard so people could browse through the most repped posts/threads in the forums history.

what do you guys think? i just thought it would be a cool addition and possibly a good time killer to read threads that may be outdated, but were popular in their time. not to mention an easy way to see some of the better moments in the 4-year span that projectego has been around.

Sounds interesting if its possible I'd like it, but I doubt it would be added? Hmmm would need to be abit useful. :-/

However it would be fun seeing the most repped post in the history of the site xD

One of the forums I go to uses a Thanks system which puts a button next to quote saying "Thanks" (obviously) that puts a small box below the post saying "Users who have thanked this post: List". I guess that's what you're after.

Also, why would you restrict that to only Gold users? Oh yeah because you're a Gold user.

Ive seen that system used too and its not as intrusive as some features too.

Much prefer the idea of a " + / - " system for each post, similar to how they have it over at Joystiq. Seen it done over at a few vB boards and it works quite well.

it's like you make an awesome post, gain rep.
then if you make one people disagree with, you lose rep.
effectively losing any record of your good moments. the rep system here makes me happy because of it's optimism. if you deserve negative rep that badly you get banned.

Well it wouldn't take away from your rep count, it's more of an agree/disagree with this post system, separate from the Rep. It'll help a good post stand out and allow people to disagree/vote down on a post that isn't very good at all or even the ones that don't add anything to the thread (like spamming an lolcat picture). Allowing one to vote down on a post might encourage members to make better posts/threads in the future, assuming one doesn't vote down a post out of spite.

It may also help us in finding trolls on the forums better since members don't make very good use of the report function, and the trolls will likely be heavily voted down.

That will be misused like crazy, anyone who disagrees with a good quality post will minus the score of it. I thought that was the reason why we could only add rep and not take away from it?
