Fellow LoTR-fans, riddle me this...

As I recall, he had always found A ring, but it wasn't always THE ring. Tolkien went back and changed... some scene. The one where Gandalf finds out about the ring, maybe? Or... something? I want to say it was the one where Bilbo rejoined them after he got the ring...

I DON'T REMEMBER!!!#$@#!!! THIS IS HORRIBLE MY TOLKIENKNOWLEDGEISLACKING.

EDIT: From Wikipedia... "In the first edition of The Hobbit, Gollum willingly bets his magic ring on the outcome of the riddle-game, and he and Bilbo part amicably.[4] In the second edition edits, in order to reflect the new concept of the ring and its corrupting abilities, Tolkien made Gollum more aggressive towards Bilbo and distraught at losing the ring. The encounter ends with Gollum's curse, "Thief! Thief, Baggins! We hates it, we hates it, we hates it forever!" This presages Gollum's portrayal in The Lord of the Rings."

I think I've already asked that, but how much better is the trilogy compared to The Hobbit. I read the latter and I didn't think it was very good.

To be fair, the writing style is ridiculously different. The Hobbit was written as a children's book, after all, whilst LotR wasn't.

I remember being read that part as a kid with Gollum screaming and being all insidious. It's really interesting to think that kids being read that book a while ago would experience that part differently.
