“This issue is related to whether a Final Fantasy VII remake will happen or not,” Kitase told Ultimania Magazine, “It is very hard to make games on PlayStation 3 in the same style as the games the PSOne era had. Making graphics will take enormous time.”

In that same interview, Motomu Toriyama explained the lesser amount of towns in Final Fantasy XIII, also blaming the high-definition era.

“Yes, a ‘non-stop’ story is one of the reasons of the game's linearity,” Toriyama said, “but more importantly, it is a result of considering high-definition graphics will be the mainstream. Considering the amount of work to make graphics that deserve high-definition, it is hard to make towns in the conventional style.”

Oh well. I'm sure it will happen... one day. I remember years ago back when the PS2, GameCube and Xbox were flavour of the month, devs would sing the praises of "next-gen" power and how future consoles would have unlimited potential. There's a certain irony when devs are unable to move forward with the "next level" of gaming when the power and technology just didn't exist back then, and now the technology is accessible now but is also what's holding them back from accomplishing things would have otherwise been much easier and cost-effective with last gen consoles.

As long as it's released for the 360 as well, I'll be happy.
