Football/Soccer

Why's it called Soccer?
Us calling it Football makes sense.. It involves a Ball and we use our feet to play with it. Where the hell did Soccer come from?

Also, the sport you call Football, you mostly use your hands in.. So shouldn't it be called Handball?

I have a list of "Why Americans are Retarded."*

*Not really.

Re: Football/Soccer

The word "soccer" actually comes from England, where the modern version of the game originated.

In England, there were two types of football: rugby football and association football. The slang term for rugby football was "rugger," and the slang for association football was "assoc." The word "assoc" gradually evolved into "soccer," which was much easier to say.

When association football was introduced to North America, gridiron football (the type played by the NFL and in the Super Bowl) was already well established. To avoid confusion, Americans adopted the British nickname "soccer" for the new sport.

So it was our fault :P

Re: Football/Soccer

whoever thought up the name was retarded. you mostly use your hands and its not even a ball.... not to mention the name was already taken. and its such a boring sport, constantly stopping and starting. I dont know how any human could possibly sit through an entire game on tv, well not sober anyway. I hate football. soccer is ok, not a fan but its ok.

and while we are on the subject of sports, I would just like to rant a bit that NASCAR is NOT a sport. if your a fan of NASCAR that fine, but its not a sport. they are racing cars, so they arent physicly doing anything. I dont care how hot it gets in the cars or how much you have to focus on the race, but untill they start racing flintstones style cars, NASCAR is not a sport.

golf is not a sport, golf is a game. hitting a ball with a crooked stick and then getting in a golf cart and going after it is not a sport. you dont even have to be in shape to play it. its not a sport, its a game. if you golf, thats fine and i respect that. but its not a sport.

ok, I think Im done now.

I agree with the Gridiron thing. But we already have Football (and it can legitemately be called that), so we say Soccer. Great game, btw.

A sport is merely a competetive game. Chess is a sport. At least that's what I was told in PE a few years ago.

Re: Football/Soccer

ok, I am consuting a dicionary on this one. this is according to my World Book Dictionary (a rather old one, its at least 20 years old).

Sport: 1. a game or other form of pastime involving some amount of bodily exercise and carried on either in the open air, as football, baseball, tennis, hunting, or fishing, or indoors, as basketball, or bowling. 2. any activity providing entertainment or recreation; pastime; diversion: After love, book collecting is the most exhilarating sport of all (A.S.W. Rosenbach) [*cough* loser *cough*].

it goes on to a total of 13 definitions, but Im not writing them all down. I suppose that by that secound one, golf is technicly a sport. but that also makes CoD4, Halo, GoW and many other lovely games that I play a sport, and me a ****ing athleate. are you proud of me now daddy?
