Sometimes developers have promotions where they give away their games for free for a limited time and they are yours to keep if you install them within that timeframe.

I currently have about 4 games in my Steam collection that I got for free recently due to these sort of promotions. So in this thread I will post any I find and any others that might be of interest to people. Everyone else is free to add any that they think people might like...

Sudden Strike 2

Sudden Strike 2 was also developed by Russian developer Fireglow and published by CDV and was released in 2002. The game has since undergone minor changes in its game engine and now features a higher resolution setting and other graphical changes.

The campaign still involves the Soviets and Allies, against the Germans and a new country, Japan. While striving for historical accuracy, the missions are mostly fiction. The American missions are in the Rhine regions and tend to involve 'borrowing' war equipment from the German army rather than using their own tanks and other weapons.

The British missions revolves around the actual events at Wolfheze and Arnhem and the attempted capture of the bridge. The Japanese missions are centered along the lines of tropical jungle warfare and the use of tanks is somewhat limited whereas the Soviet campaign is based on the capture of the city of Kharkov and other battles along the Dniepr river waged by the Soviet Red Army

I tried Tropico 4 some time ago and recommend it. Exciting gameplay and funny as well.
It had some issues towards the later stages (mainly the horrible teamster AI that will stunt your growth), which somewhat impacts its longevity, but nevertheless its worth it for the startup challenges.

Dungeon Keeper Free on Origin

Directed by Peter Molyneux, the 1997 strategy game is all about building horrendous dungeons. The more resistant they are to looters and hero-characters the better, and if you've ever raided a dungeon in an RPG you'll probably have an advantage.

Bohemia Interactives (Open prototype) Project Argo is free at the moment. For those who dont know what it is, it's basically a smaller scale 5vs5 Arma III. Some more details about it can be found here.

Project Argo is an Arma 3 total conversion that transforms Bohemia's massive military sim into a five-on-five tactical game. Right now Argo has three modes: two are focused on controlling sectors or capture points, and another on attack-and-defend. "In each of the three game modes, players also have the option to capture a paradrop, which can dramatically change the tide of battle—adding yet another tactical element to the confrontation," reads the Argo website. Maybe most interestingly, Argo will play out on a renovated version of Malden, the original terrain in the first Arma game. This in-development remake of Malden will be added to Arma 3 as free DLC in June 2017, per the Arma 3 roadmap.
