I haven't played rock band yet, so i can't really say but...
the drum kit is apparently better on GHWT. you can use gh's for RB, but not vice versa.
RB has alot more songs for DL but less originals too.
GHWT has customisable characters and you can make your own songs.
they have the same mic.
GH is a much better established franchise with 7 different issues (GH1, GH2, Rocks the 80's GH3LoR, GH Aerosmith, GHWT, the one on DS which looks like it sucks, and apparently a Guitar Hero Metallica coming sometime in '09.
Rock Band Comes with 2 guitars (lead and bass) but GHWT only has 1.
Rock Band added extra fret buttons at the base of the neck, GHWT copied it
this is all i know, but i can't really judge. i have GH2 & 3, and can't wait to get my hands n GHWT

rock band 2 beats all though... imo
it basically comes down to the songs... I would say GH cause WT has a korn song... and GH Metallica is comign soon YAY!!!!!!!!

It depends.
Get Guitar Hero if you like guitar the most (Because the guitar is x5 better than rbs)
Get Rockband if you like more of a diversity.
I personally liked Rock Band better for unknown reasons. But i don't play either of them anymore.

ive gotten better, but i can only play on easy mode

I haven't played Rock Band nor Guitar Hero, but if I had to choose between the two I'd rather start with Guitar Hero. Guitar Hero just looks more entertaining to me - from what I've seen, anyway.

Anyways, in terms of quality, Guitar Hero is much much better, as it is manufactured by RedOctane. As said in a previous post, Guitar Hero is much more established. Of those Rock Band fanboys who say "Guitar Hero: World Tour copied Rock Band", I say "Screw you, Rock Band took GH's songs and guitar." I do not own Rock Band (for reasons stated), but I have tried it. I could not activate Rock Band's "Star Power", and the fret buttons were sticky. And I was too used to a clicking strum bar.
The drums of Guitar Hero: World Tour have cymbals. Yay!
GH: WT has much less DLC compared to Rock Band, which does make the game quite boring and repetative if you play long enough. (Me.)
Guitar Hero is harder than Rock Band though. This "problem" has been fixed with Beginner mode. And to those who say Guitar Hero: World Tour's Band system is messed up, it's the same as playing Co-operative in the previous games with a shared Rock meter.
The new Guitar Hero guitar is bigger, has a longer whammy bar, longer strum bar, and an easy to reach Star Power button (which isn't needed, as you can just lift the neck of the guitar [unlike most Rock Band guitars].) It also has a sensor bar thingy.
DISCLAIMER - I've pretty much mentioned most of the Pro's of Guitar Hero. I don't own Rock Band, so feel free to make a Con's list.

i have 3 songs left to finish on hard on GH3, and i'm abut 3/4 of the way through on expert. not claiming that i'm good at it though, at all. there are sme people who are insane when it comes to playing these game,. wh could ever imagine that anyone could get 5 stars on through fire and flames on expert. i can't even finish the sng on hard!!!

I like rockband more. They had the full band thing first, and now have an awesome symbol and high-hat set to add to the drums. They also have the cool finger rolling bass guitar, though I haven't had a chance to use it. The main thing is that all the downloaded songs from the first game can be played on the new one. Their songs are also better. They have a lot of more modern music that I like to listen to and it makes it all the more fun to play something that I love to listen to already.
