Agreed. The whole purpose of the stereotype horizontal formation that the British Redcoats were famous for was because it was unfortunately the only effective way to hit their opponents.
I've always wondered why simple bows, which probably could be more effective in accuracy and rate of fire, were not used in favor of muskets until more accurate firearms were developed since the only thing that made firearms better was their damage to armor (which wasn't even worn anymore!)
