Haiti

Just thought I'd make a thread for the people of Haiti. It's less than the least I could do, but my thoughts are with them.

For those who haven't noticed, an earthquake of magnitude 7 hit Haiti, roughly 10 miles outside Port-au-Prince, the capital, at five o'clock today. There seems to be very little information yet. Which is probably a bad sign.

Any bets that the US Coast Guard is gonna get the first aid to them?

that isn't good... i'd imagine the us coast guard will do everything they can, i smell a haiti relief fundraiser around the corner... if we can do it for indonesia after that tsunami in '04(?) then haiti will get equal if not better treatment...being so much easier to reach and all.

Re: Haiti

7 is crazy. Hopefully the Coast Guard will get to them! And their houses are most certainly not built like ours, easy crumble. We really need to get aid over there, maybe the National Guard will go to with the Coast Guard, FEMA too?

Re: Haiti

So that's what it was. I heard something about a magnitude 7 quake on the radio, but by the time my brain had gone "What? Listen closer." the bulletin was over.

That sucks. I hope it's all ok.

Re: Haiti

Didn't it take America weeks to react to New Orleans? Nah they wont act on Haiti I don't think. I just saw a snippet of news about it when I got out of bed so I still dunno much about it.

Four words specificially for you: United. States. Coast. Guard. Look into the work they did on Katrina. They kicked ass. Probably the best responders (among other things) in the US government.

Among the many reasons that the American government shouldn't get directly involved. If any government were to do anything, they can contribute to organizations that actually know how to handle these things, like the Red Cross.

Please, let's avoid a political argument, but, BITE ME, bitch. According to this NY Times blog, as of shortly before midnight the Coast Guard had dispatched:

Some Random NY Times blogger said:
The White House said Tuesday evening that the Coast Guard was mobilizing cutters and aircraft to positions near Haiti to offer humanitarian aid in the aftermath of the earthquake. The assets deployed to the area, included:

A C-130 Hercules fixed-wing aircraft from Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater, Fla.

The Coast Guard Cutter Valiant, a 210-foot reliance class cutter from Miami.

The Coast Guard Cutter Forward, a 270-foot medium endurance cutters from Portsmouth, Va.

The Coast Guard Cutter Tahoma, a 270-foot medium endurance cutter from Portsmouth, N.H.

The Coast Guard Cutter Mohawk, a 270-foot medium endurance cutter from Key West, Fla.
This is because the Coast Guard is utterly badass and, in addition to every damn other thing they do, disaster relief is one of their major responsibilities. And the Carribbean is one of their major areas of operation.

And yes, other parts of the US gov and other places are sending aid as well. But I like the Coast Guard, and I'm a wannabe Coastie, so I only looked up and quoted on them.

And no, I'm not trying to start an argument, John. I just like the work the Coast Guard does and I'm mentioning it for that reason.

Ouch. I'm really, really glad I don't live in Haiti right now.

Yeah.

So great that neither they, or hardly anyone else did anything in New Orleans, a place that is actually in the USA. I'll judge the USA's response to natural disasters on that thank you very much.

Re: Haiti

Pardon me while I bang my head against a wall, Shirosaki. Hurricane Katrina? Y'know, the big 'un, that hit New Orleans and Mississipi and all that ****? The one you're bitching about how the US gov did nothing?

The Coast Guard is essentially the only government agency that did an extremely effective job and responded quickly. I assume Time Magazine is a reputable enough source for you? http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1122007,00.html

If you look around you can find lots more on how well they did. Oh, and for Haiti? They had no time to plan ahead and they already got the cutter Forward down from Virginia this morning, a couple C-130s from Florida, and some helos, plus more cutters and aircraft on the way.

In addition to the NYT blog, here's the blurb from the Compass, the official Coast Guard blog.

Compass said:
Haiti Relief

Around 5 p.m. EST yesterday, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake centered 10 nautical miles south of Port Au Prince, Haiti. CGC Forward arrived off Port Au Prince this morning, equipped with a helicopter flight deck, satellite communications equipment, and the ability to provide coordination to military aircraft in the area. The CGC Mohawk, is scheduled to arrive this afternoon. Two Coast Guard C-130 airplanes from Air Station Clearwater are flying the coast of Western Haiti this morning providing damage assessments and searching for people in need of assistance. Two Coast Guard helicopters are also forward deployed in the area to provide rescue or other assistance as needed.

Two more cutters, CGC Tahoma and CGC Valiant, are standing by for tasking as directed.

The President designated the Administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), Dr. Raj Shah, to be the Unified Disaster Coordinator. United States Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM) has activated a crisis action team to assess the situation and Department of State has implemented the Disaster Response Plan to support efforts in Haiti. Other Department of Homeland Security and U.S. assets are also responding.

And yes, I realize I'm spending more time bragging about the Coast Guard than doing anything about Haiti, but here's a link to a hopefully-reputable-and-genuine blog post about the Red Cross. Give the bastards some money. Apparently you can send 'em a text? Iunno.

Re: Haiti

EDIT: Nvm I can't be bothered with an argument. However, I'm not going to read your essay. It is fact that there was hardly any aid sent to New Orleans for weeks after the hurricane. It was on global news.

Re: Haiti

NO. That is not a fact. It is a fact that the Coast Guard is the only US aid that was there for the first week after, and that when FEMA ****ed up the Coast Guard got the job of dealing with the mess.

Yes, the fact that the rest of the government ****ed up with everything else is very sad. The Coast Guard is a tiny branch (roughly 40-50 thousand), and they did a ridiculous amount with the men and women they sent to save lives as soon as the storm was passed-- lots of the people they sent had lost their won homes to the storm. They saved 33,500 people after Katrina. Almost as many as are IN the Coast Guard. Six times as many as they saved in all 2004.

Took FEMA a week to get water to the Super Dome. (New Orleans)

Re: Haiti

I can't see the US helping Haiti to much, in all fairness. Even if there is proof, that might be ALL they send. That's probably my Anti-American side coming out... But that's for another topic.

There wasn't any warnings or anything? I remember that all the warnings New Orleans got before it got wrecked but did Haiti get any? Not being c0cky. Serious question.

It's a shame, really. The worlds poorest country and it's capital gets mangled by an earthquake.

Re: Haiti

I'm just glad Australia doesn't get Earthquakes or Hurricanes (we got one, ok). All our volcanoes are dead, and we never get tsunamis. We get bad bushfires sometimes, but I don't think that one really bad one is enough to make a thing out of.

Well, hurricanes are relatively easy to predict from the shore, since they come from the sea. Earthquakes, well unless you're Superman, you need equipment set up to monitor the pre-quake seismic readings that would tip off that there's a gigantic earthquake coming. And because I don't remember Haiti or the Dominican Republic getting notable earthquakes of any kind to any measure, it's probably a safe bet that they didn't have such monitoring going on.

Ah, ok.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Re: Haiti

I heard on the radio that it's going to be a week before we know anything for sure.
