Halo: Reach to have "Challenges"

March 25, 2010 - G4TV has a story up that reveals Bungie's strategy for Player Investment. This somewhat dull sounding concept is in fact what has helped to make the Call of Duty franchise such a mega hit. The idea is to reward the player with RPG-like elements for completing tasks or meeting goals.

The catch for Halo: Reach? It won't be confined to the multiplayer game.

"Whatever your preferred flavor of Halo is, we're gonna find a way to reward you," Luke Smith, designer on player investment for Bungie, told G4TV. Player Investment is described as being like your Trueskill ranking, but more detached from the competitive side of things. It will instead reflect just how much of your life you've poured into Halo: Reach. Even if you suck at Halo, you can still have a good Player Investment rank.

The system works on credits, which are awarded to you just for playing the game in multiplayer or campaign modes. More credits are awarded for specific actions – G4TV describes one potential goal as being five headshots in under a minute -- which can then be spent on customization options in the Armory.

None of the things purchasable in the Armory will affect how the game is played. These rewards will be visual perks only -- a means of showing off online. The customized look carries over from multiplayer game into the campaign, even in cutscenes

Another new feature revealed is called Challenges. Daily and weekly Bungie-created tasks will be made, some made for the solo player and some intended to be tackled by groups. And these, according to G4TV, will have a significant difficulty curve.

The last bit of news is another addition called Commendations. These sound like an extension of the medals in Halo 3, though they will be persistent and "reflect player actions over an extended period of time," writes G4TV. Play with a sniper rifle a lot, and your Commendations will let everyone know that's how you roll. It will all be on the Service Record.

Be sure to head to G4TV for more details and some exclusive screenshots.

I like the idea of customisation without having to spend real money.

I'm not looking to forward to it. I might pick it up after christmas. It stills seems a "to buy" game.

As much as I dislike Halo, this seems like an excellent system. I'm interested.

Thats one thing that got me hooked on Call Of Duty 4 and MW2. Completing the challenges for extra XP to customise my loadout more.
