Action RPG Hellgate suffered its share of problems when developer Flagship Studios filed for bankruptcy in 2008. Now the game is coming back as a free-to-play MMO.
Online action RPG Hellgate (or Hellgate: London as it was originally known) challenged players to pick one of six character classes and take on the forces of darkness in and underneath the city of London. The game combined hack and slash and shooter gameplay and was reasonably well-received. We gave it three stars here at GamePro, and noted that desipte some good ideas, the game lacked personality due to its randomly-generated levels and anachronistic game mechanics.
The game was open from October 2007 until the end of January 2009. The game had a troubled history, with developer Flagship Studios filing for bankruptcy in 2008 and its intellectual properties seized as collateral. Namco Bandai maintained the servers until 2009, when they were shut down for good.
For good, that is, until Korean developer-publisher T3 Entertainment came along and snapped up the game. Now it seems the game is to make a return, but as a free-to-play MMO. A closed beta will be taking place between June 3 and 5, and if you're interested in taking part, you should keep an eye on the official website to see when sign-ups begin.
The free-to-play version of the game is due to launch later this year.
