Internet Censorship

Do you cry when you read this???

fortunately it was postponed, but the entertainment industry is pushing the government to censor the internet. why does this affect you in the UK? Australia? Sweden? Denmark? Everywhere inbetween?

because if the US government decides to blacklist a website according to the bill, it's not just blocked in the US. it's GONE.

it's an infraction on freedom of speech, something that's always inconvenient for some, but the important thing is you just have to man up and deal with it. nobody likes a whiner.
it's also wrong that they are trying to pass action that affects online browsing for the entire globe and not just the country. for that reason, it should be held by the UN, regardless of how incompetent they may be at times. one things for certain, they don't give two posteriors about big american record company X and their influence on politics.

where does it end? will they censor sites that are disgusting or offensive next? fetish sites? wikileaks? ED? 4chan? somethingaweful?

they best stop now before they start down a slippery slope that'll make a lot of people around the world less content with us than they already are.

honestly, this whole thing appalls me.

stupid pundits. stupid, STUPID, pundits.

EDIT: i personally contacted both of my states senators. if i can do anything that'll stop this **** from happening then i'm gonna do it. if you feel strongly about it, i recommend you do the same. you can find all of their personal sites complete with contact info here.

Re: Internet Censorship

I somewhat agree with You. when You supress something that has a large or dedicated following following, it only really causes anger & in some cases makes people want to access whatever has been censored even more. They essensially try to control the way people THINK, silencing people does not change their interests or the way that they think, the state should know that by now.

There's nothing worse than an arrogant state that thinks it knows what's best for individuals better than they do. It dumbs people down and creates the illusion that they have to be spoon fed. This is why I can't stand socialism, what they don't like or can't have for themselves they seize or destroy (or 'censor' as they call it) even if the practice in question harms nobody.

Re: Internet Censorship

I, personally, believe that this is a huge waste of time as they should be focusing on ANYTHING but this issue...seeing as it's not an issue at all.

And, by the way, Socialism is a form of Economy, not Government. The Economy has no say in what the internet can and cannot have.

Socialism is a both a political theory and a form of economy, but what I'm saying is that censorship is a hallmark of a socialist government.

Re: Internet Censorship

Yeah, they are trying to bring Internet censorship into Australia, and with all of the idiots within our government who are supposed to be looking out for the best interests for the country, I wouldn't be surprised if this goes through.

Oh...my bad. I was just thinking Socialism was like Capitalism...but oops, clearly I didn't read all the way through my sources before making the comment. (I just looked it up again...yeah, I don't remember reading that part :/)

I really don't understand the point of this, however...it all seems really pointless. I mean, they're taking away all of our Constitutional Rights just because it makes old people "uncomfortable"...I'm really over it -_-

on the contrary super saiyan charles barkley,
it's not even that. most old people who don't know jack about the internet couldn't care less. entertainment industries are pushing for the bill. record labels, film producers, television networks, all losing money to p2p filesharing websites and programs. sure, we all know it's fundamentally wrong to use them, but they could CREATE ways of making it impossible to pirate.
media files that self delete when transfered? a more advanced system for tracking pirates? releasing bugged files into the filesharing network?

all of these sound pretty bad, but all of them are INFINITELY better than what is being proposed.

The government in Australia censor things like it's an addiction from what I've seen.

Re: Internet Censorship

In my country they don't censor anything, mostly because most of the government-related things (including postal services) Don't use computers that much.

Re: Internet Censorship

Obviously, they must start to use ninja's to fight them. :ninja:

On topic, though; WAZ DA FURC. I just agree with the people above me. >=|

EDIT: Post count 500! yay. Gladiator! =|

Re: Internet Censorship

And just as socialism =/= autocracy.

But yeah, our government has decided that they're going to try to quietly pass an censorship bill - OH, I'm sorry, a mandatory internet filter, which will protect people from accidentally finding child porn.

I sincerely hope that this doesn't occur in any significant world power.

do you think that australia may lose 4chan from that? i'm not asking whether you do or don't like the site, but that'd **** off a lot of /b/tards if it happened.

Like it or not, 4chan is a perfect example of free speech being utilised to its fullest extent. If everywhere could be more like it in that regard, then the world would be a better place.

I'm hoping enough people resist this censorship for the bill to ultimately fail, but our government has a history of going directly opposite popular opinion, purely to serve their own ends. I'm hoping our new minority government will be stable enough to last the full term, but unstable enough for them not to risk trying to push this massively unpopular legislation.

Re: Internet Censorship

Censorship can go f**k itself... dammit, they got me. I'm hit!
