This is kind of interesting to me. For those of you who don't know, the Constitution that Japan adopted after WWII (with, ah, "encouragement" from the US) forbids them from having an offensive military, so instead they have an assortment of Self-Defense Forces. And they're actually pretty serious about it, but in the last 18 years they've started deploying on support missions for the UN, as well as deploying to Iraq at the request of the US-- even armed, which apparently caused some controversy. So, here's the thing-- does anyone think that stuff like this will cause an increase in deployments of the Japanese military? Apparently, they already deployed some Maritime Self Defense Force ships to defend their shipping over that way, but I find it interesting that they're coming out again.
I also find their Coast Guard interesting. It seems to be a law enforcement-rescue-military organization along the lines of the USCG, but from the sound of it their ships are actually more heavily armed than USCG cutters. And their largest JCG vessel is actually bigger than the largest USCG ones-- and where the USCG has icebreakers, they have a pretty long-legged, well-armed... biggish frigate or smallish destroyer.
