Just wanted to talk about her
July 24, 1995 is the day my little sister, Catie, was born. She's five years younger than me, and she'd be turning 15 this year. Would have just finished her sophomore year of high school this year.
She was diagnosed with cancer in 2002. "Alveolar rhabdomyocarcoma." Really ****ed-up soft-tissue cancer that usually hits kids. From what I remember, it likes teenagers and babies, so my sister is special. She was diagnosed when she was six, couple weeks before her seventh birthday. I was twelve, or eleven-- my birthday is eighteen days before hers, and I don't remember when exactly she was diagnosed. We spent so ****ing much time in hospitals over the next two years. She fought so ****ing hard.
We lost her in 2004. November 27th. When she was nine. It's going on six damn years ago now, and it feels like yesterday. We went down to Children's Hospital National Medical Center in DC yesterday-- delivered these care package-type things we do for kids being treated. It was heartbreaking, but we saw Ms. Terry, who does volunteer services there. We knew her when Catie was being treated, and she was really great.
We're going down to her favorite restaurant (Olive Garden) when I get off work. Which is really hard, because I'm sitting here at work being reminded of her by every little kid or movie she liked or book she read.
Just wanted to share her story. Every person who remembers her is like... I don't know, but I want people to remember her. Thank you.
And happy birthday, Catie.
