Kinect Price Tag a Concern For Activision

Those of you baulking at the £129.99/$149.99 price point for Microsoft's Kinect are not alone, as Activision is sharing similar concerns that are making the publisher reluctant to take a risk on investing in the motion controller.

Activision's low risk approach to the games business has amassed the company $3 billion in profit, so in keeping with that successful low risk mantra, Acti is exercising caution before announcing its plans for Kinect.

Activision COO Thomas Tippl told Gamasutra that he is "absolutely" concerned about the high price of Kinect, stating that a lower price would create a greater install base for the new technology, in turn making it more desirable as a potential investment.

"The bigger the install base, the more likely that you can make sense out of your investment. So, the lower the price, the better. In this economic environment, it's probably more important than ever," said Tippl.

Tippl went on to state that: "Move and Kinect, I think, will be interesting new opportunities to innovate certain franchises, but probably not for every kind of game. So, we'll have to see how much of an install base they're going to develop."

He then continued by saying that certain Activision franchises like Tony Hawk and Rapala Fishing would be a suitable fit for Kinect before adding, "But it's not going to be something that will be in every game, because I don't think it's one size fits all. It's not going to enhance the experience for every game."

Kinect is due to launch in November 2010.
