Learning guitar? =S

OK I have had a guitar sitting in the corner of my room now for aaaaaaaaaaaaages and now i wanna learn too play it, getting lessons from a teacher are out of the question due to the fact i'm too poor. Is there an online tutorial i can use? Or can anyone on here help me personaly? (online not meeting up RL lol) I would MUCHLY appreicate any help.

there's +rep init for you ;]

Re: Learning guitar? =S

I'd be willing to assist if you want. I'm a competent guitarist myself. You'd probably want to go for the more cohesive youtube lessons and the like, though.

Any questions though, I'd be happy to answer :)

Well I'm a complete beginner , I Know NOTING about the guitar, or how to use it X] so if you could teatch me the basics?

Re: Learning guitar? =S

Look up tabulature of your favorite songs. It's like reading music for the musically inept.

I'll start off by telling you that as a begginer, make sure when you push down on a string, you are using the end of your fingers, rather than the flat part. That helps to make sure you're not deadening any other strings. Also, push really hard. It'll hurt, but it'll stop hurting once you get used to it.

Next, you should learn to read tab. It's like sheet music for guitar and it's very easy to learn.

E |--------------------|------------------|--------------------|-------------------|
B |--------------------|------------------|--------------------|-------------------|
G |-0---3---5----0--|---3---6-5------|-0---3---5----3--|---0--------------|
D |-0---3---5----0--|---3---6-5------|-0---3---5----3--|---0--------------|
A |--------------------|------------------|--------------------|-------------------|
E |--------------------|------------------|--------------------|-------------------|

That's a standard tab for the intro to Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple (the definitive guitar song). The lines represent what string to hit, and the numbers represent what fret to hit. 0 means just leave the string open. The bottom line is the bottom (deepest. When I say bottom I mean in terms of pitch, not physically) string, and up from there. If there's two or more numbers on top of each other (like you have in this song), it just means to play them at the same time.

If you need to tune the guitar (and you will need to. Frequently), there are a number of things you can use. As a beginner I would refrain from trying to do it by ear, as it probably won't have been trained properly (I don't know if you play other instruments or anything. If you do, give it a go). I'd use an computer/internet based tuner for now. Here are a couple of good ones.

After that, I'd reccomend learning some basic chords.

They're all the basic chords. Most songs are made up of a combination of those chords, so learning them should let you play a lot of songs. The main thing here is to work on changing quickly between chords, and making sure you say in time with whatever you're playing along to (if at all).

Also, here's a good site which has heaps of songs on it. Just look one up.

Re: Learning guitar? =S

I added a bit to it. The basic chords. Useful stuff.

I'd also strongly recommend getting lessons when you're able. They really help.

I think that teaching yourself helps mostly. There are many guides on the internet for right and left handed guitarists and teachers are very repetitive.

Re: Learning guitar? =S

If only I had my sisters guitar at home, I`d learn at least the chords.

It's all a matter of finding the right teacher. Trust me, once you get one that's good for you, it's really helpful. I improved about 150% when I got a guitar teacher who was cool.

Even if they're not that great, they give you guidance and push you, which is what you need to learn any instrument well.

Eh. I never took lessons, and I turned out fine! Good to see some more guitarists here :D.

And to Fallen Saviour, I can try to teach you, I'm not so good of a teacher because I self taught my self (Through ear and tabs), but I can show you a couple easy songs. Oh yes, what kind of guitar do you have? And what kind of music are you interested in playing? If you want, i can give you my MSN and I can teach you on that, and NO I am not a stalker... I'm 12.

Re: Learning guitar? =S

Tell me what you need and I'll give it a shot, just a few questions
1. Acoustic or electric
2. what is company name on guitar
3. what is your style of music

Recommendations... No, facts you must read
1. I can only help you with rock or metal

2.I recomend a dean mlx to start out with when you are playing rock or metal it only costs $300 and a roland cube 15x amp, it only costs $100 and is the greatest amp out there for that price

3. fender sucks assnuggets, stay as far away from them as possible

4. first act sucks

5. gibson, dean, and bc rich are the only guitar worth bothering with

6. acoustic sucks balls

7. Electric kicks ass

8. Make sure you use d'adario strings, they last the longest

9. Ernie ball sucks ass, they break after a weak

10. angus young and zakk wylde are the greatest guitarists ever to live, they make great influences as they both play blues, angus plays hard rock, and zakk plays metal and acoustic rock, so with them you get the best of all rock worlds

11. One of the most powerfull tools in my arsenal are power chords, look them up on youtube

12. also look up drop d tuning

13. double drop d tuning is great too so you might also look that up

14. search youtube for other alternate metal and rock tunings

15. Don't use heavy strings, they are hard to bend or push down and they bend the neck which is bad no matter what music you play

16. also, when you are a little better at it, learn pinch harmonic they are one of the most beautiful things one can learn for metal and rock in general

17. A lot of people will say it is better to learn on an acoustic, they are as wrong as possible.

Those are my words of wisdom, I would follow them, as they helped me a bunch, and I am also self taught.

Re: Learning guitar? =S

I would teach you, but I gave up on guitar a long while ago, though I still have it in my room and know a few basic chords... I am thinking of trying piano... I can't say much about lessons, I got them for free (My dad's friend is a real good guitarist and had nothing better to do.) But there are several sites to check out, including youtube... which is where I would start, Arseface's script is where you should hit WHILE touching on the youtube videos.

1. Acoustic or electric

Doesn't matter at this point.

That DEFINITELY doesn't matter

Fender make one of the most versatile guitar's ever made. Fender and Gibson are the best guitar makers out. Only poncey metal guitarists go for Ibanez or whatever. I can name heaps of reputed guitar Gods that play Fenders.

James Butts;282648 said:

Having never played a Dean or a BC Rich, I cannot say anything about them. However, Fender still make the best guitar.

Have you never heard an acoustic played well?

I like Ernie balls, they're great if your not raping the strings every time you play.

Every rock guitarist plays blues. Rock is blues.

Finally, some sense. Rock music is full of em. VERY useful and VERY easy to learn.

Don't complicate matters for the young man.

Pinch harmonics are overrated (unless you're a ZZ Top fan).

I learnt on an acoustic. It helped make me as versatile as I am today.

What kind of music do you play? Give me specific bands, not just a genre.

I'm not trying to start a fight or anything here. I'm just sick of people being so singleminded when it comes to music.

Well, being a metalhead, I like these:
Black Sabbath
Any band Zakk Wylde is in
Ozzy
Dio is okay
Kyuss
Zeppelin is pretty good
zz top is great
black label society during the time of Zakk's leave
black label society with Zakk
Alice in chain
I hate the way fender sounds, and, all of the above play gibson, except zztop and Alice in chains, not sure what they play. Fender guitars also look gay when compared to gibson sg's or les pauls, the necks on fenders are too thin compared to those two, and the dean ml series kicks ass with looks, sounds and playability, bc rich is similar to dean except for looks.
This is where the reasoning comes from:
Zakk Wylde (uses a les paul and lots of pinch harmonics or squeelies)
Angus Young (uses an sg, and a marshall, the best amp on the planet)
Zeppelin (uses les paul and sg)
Acoustic guitar strings don't bend easily, are stiff, and hard to play on.
Zakk Wylde is the only guitarist that I think sounds good on acoustic

The bridge pickup on a Fender has the best sound for blues.

I'll agree to a point. Stratocasters don't look as good as LPs or SGs, but they still look pretty good.

James Butts;282648 said:

Well, it's a different playing style. Fenders aren't as good at the chunky sound (or look) of the Gibsons. They're more streamlined and sexy, IMHO.

You've obviously never played a good acoustic. Or your fingers are too weak to make it work :P

A few of my reasons for liking Fender are:

Eric Clapton plays a Strat. Nuff said.

Hendrix wouldn't even set a Gibson on fire.

Gilmour turned the playing of the Strat into a an practice rivalling love making.

It has been proven to be impossible to play any Dire Straits song on anything other than a Strat.

Guess where the Edge gets his trademark sound?
