Why would they replace the item that was stolen? And why would they put it in the same place? If someone robbed me, I'd put my valubles in a more secretive place than I did before.

well the more valuable things would def. be in a more secretive place, but if it was like books or anything they should replace it

Hehehe...maybe if NPC's did hide their stuff in a new place, it can be a challenge for you to find the new location - each one is more tricky than the last and when you find, say, five locations you get some kind of reward? I dunno...
