No HUD

I was looking at the http://forums.projectego.net/test-level-2359/ thread and realized
OMG I just noticed There's no HUD (Heads Up Display in other words that stuff on the screen)

They were talking about getting rid of it. so the question is where did the put the information that was there. Here are my guesses
  • Health and Will bars - - My guess is that you will somehow be able to tell your Health and Will by looking at your character. If your low on health you will look hurt and maybe even be bent over from pain. Will will be determined by a glow that you have or lack if you're low on will.
  • Map will toggle in three positions (off, small, large)
  • The Guild Seal will be replace by a dog collar  in won't do everything that the old one did.
  • Quick keys this is going to be part of the one button system that Peter talks about I'm not sure how you will have freedom of choice with one button but I'm trusting them to figure that out.
  • Time of day will be visible in the lighting and perhaps audio cues like "lights out you 'orrible lots"
  • As far as any other info like how many Elixirs of Life etc I think that there will be a inventory screen and other information screens that you will be able to pull up. The less there is of this the better as far as I'm concerned

Re: No HUD

Welll the poem says

Front end and Hud, stuck in the mud, but help is on the way…
while pretty sights and rare delights, will come on Sibbick's day.

I thought they were going to get rid of the health bar. I'm pretty sure there should still be something since it's in the poem.

Maybe the stuck in the mud part was about them trying to figure out where to put everything. I don't see anything on the screen.

I'm saying that the health bar will be replaced by the hero looking beat up and hurt
Meh won't be long now 2008 is right around the corner :noexpression:

Re: No HUD

I think they got rid of those things so not to obstruct/distract people from the graphics.

I think your dead on with the health bar thing; your character may limp, move slower or breathe heavily when in danger of lossing health and willpower.

The map. . .mabey an item you have to access in you menu, and even then it may not display where you are.

But Im looking foward to how they go about this. . . when you think about it somthing like this will either be praised or cursed depending on how well they impiment the idea.

Re: No HUD

Peter said in an interview that there wouldn't be a HUD. Personally I like the idea. It makes the game a little trickier when you don't know whats around the bend.

Re: No HUD

I heard way way waaaay back that we wouldn't have any HUD, in the traditional sense. Instead, you willl be able to tell your overal healthyness by the way your character looks, i.e limping around or bleeding.

So do you think the dog will run ahead of you towards the direction of your next quest/important person to talk to, replacing the gold and silver seals as well as the green dots on the map?

I think I remember you saying that. I think the quick keys will be assigned in a menu and then you'll just have to remember what they are. That would make gameplay smoother.

Are we missing anything from the HUD? What do you think ?

Re: No HUD

I personally really like the idea, maybe these ideas are right and maybe you will have to rely on seeing how your character looks to determine health etc but i think maybe theres a chance your health will ONLY flash up when your getting hurt and then disappear again or your will energy will only show when using a will attack or something like this... just an idea.

Re: No HUD

I pretty much know for a fact that the dog is replacing most of the HUD features apparently. Anybody who seen my news post, and the one on Kotaku, before it was removed due to legal reasons would know that its as good as confirmed and already 100% implemented... my news post should be back up sometime later this evening- 10pm is when we are allowed to reveal it again I think....

Re: No HUD

Here's one site that talks about it
XboxAddict | 360.Xboxaddict.com - Your home for all of your Xbox, Xbox 360 Games, Cheats, Review and Previews | Xbox, Xbox 360 Gaming needs! xboxaddict.com

The aforementioned applications of this four-legged friend include scouting ahead, directing your character so you no longer need a mini-map as well as attacking immediate threats depending on your own actions; pull a gun and it will attack any sword wielders and visa versa.

Well considering:

the dog will operate independently of its owner, but will play a real part in adventuring, pointing out paths, alerting its owner to danger, and attacking foes.
Than yeah.

Re: No HUD

I find this really interesting - the idea of your faithful ol' pet dog acting as some kind of HUD system in itself certainly sounds very unique; I haven't heard of anything like it before anyway. I can't wait to see how it turns out!

Re: No HUD

I myself kind of like the idea of the health loss or will loss showing on the exterior of your character. That would be an interesting thing to add into the mix. No HUD means more free space to admire the world around you and adds a little element of realism... not that that's always good in games though.

Re: No HUD

Has no one played Resident Evil 4? It's not the first time health loss affects a character. If leons life goes down too much he has different stages of limping. He holds his side, and various other things when he's hurt

yeah, the same thing happens in KotOR... your characters will begin limping, holding themeselves and moving really sluggishly until you can heal them...

Re: No HUD

It would be cool if you see your character be effected physically, but they may need more than just that.. (I don't know about you, but I can really zone out....^^;.....) Maybe for the xbox version they could do something like Silent Hill, where you could feel your heartbeat in the controler..... that would be helpful....

See, Even kotor has that. So it's not the first time a character is affected by how much damage they have :ninja:

Re: No HUD

It aslo happened in Mario 64. Mario would be out of breathe and say "I'ma Tired"

Heehee I could hear the perfectly in my head. That's cute

I also read, that the dog, if hurt enough, would limp home if ignored. So what then?
