Northwest Passage?

Re: Northwest Passage?

i think it's terrible. it's going to give rich businessmen a reason to increase toxic emmissions. people will be looking at the benefits of such a thing and not realize that, while useful, it's the beginning of something that we should be trying to prevent.

Re: Northwest Passage?

Whether or not climate change is a cyclical thing, or it's all our fault, it's too late to stop it now. Better to adapt to it, and use it to our advantage.

To quote that Okeer dude: "The worst insult you can give to an enemy is to ignore him."

Re: Northwest Passage?

... I should have known you'd all go with the boring ****.

I MEANT, what do you think about the effects of this? I mean, for instance-- the Canadians think that it's their waters, the US claims international waters. If it's international then, for instance, the Coast Guard would need to provide coverage there-- SAR and antismuggling and fisheries enforcement and all.

So, what, will the Coast Guard get more icebreakers? Will us and Canada go to war again? Will the fearsome Grizzly Cavalry and dreaded RCMP of the Imperialist Great Northern Aggressors once again threaten my fair nation?

:D

Re: Northwest Passage?

What UN "servant of the sea" would have to get involved? The USCG and... the Canadian Coast Guard? And I guess the Danes? And maybe the Icelandians? Could handle it perfectly well.

Re: Northwest Passage?

Just treat it like regular water. 200 miles or whatever it is off the coast is international, and any land that get's revealed can be treated as terra nulluis, like Antarctica.

Re: Northwest Passage?

As I recall, the official US position is that Canada's claim doesn't count-- they're extending their exclusive economic zone from all those piddly little islands, rather than from their mainland. UNFAIR.

Also, a bunch of countries claim that parts of the Arctic Ocean are their internal waters. The US disagrees.

Also-also, several different bodies of water are "international" by convention, going from a bit of googling, even though they would seem otherwise just looking at a map. Even one river in Europe.

ALSO, I feel the neet to point this out: POST 2999.

Re: Northwest Passage?

Just treat it like the South Pacific, and everyone will do fine.

Re: Northwest Passage?

I live in the US and even I think we're a bunch of douches. It honestly doesn't surprise me that the US still does whatever they want, as if they own the world when they have trillions in debt.

Kinda amusing really.

Again, I live in the US and I have to agree with Walker, we're douches out for self profit, nothing more.

Also note: I speak in generalization. I myself, am not a douche, but most of my country is.

Re: Northwest Passage?

Whaaaat? No, Howler, you don't agree with me. I don't think we're douches. Out for profit, maybe, but we aren't the only ones.

I don't think that the Arctic should be considered part of Canada's EEZ. Or, anyway, if it is, we should be petulant and whiny and force everyone to pay lots of money to sail past Alaska.

Re: Northwest Passage?

I think it is pretty douchey of us, but all is fair in Trade Routes and Love and War, correct? I have detached myself from American events lately, focusing on foreign news and sometimes no news at all, with the exception of Science Daily.

ICEBERGS. We need more icebergs! We'll steal all of them we can get as part of our anti-global warming campaign. WE SHALL SECURE DC BEHIND AN IMPENETRABLE WALL OF ICE.
