Online Marriage
so I was playing Halo 3 matchmaking not several hours ago and i encountered a 31 year old gamer who was a liscenced pastor. i learned several interesting things about being a pastor and a gamer.
1.) it is in fact legal to have a marital ceremony over a video game. this man had personally married people over world of warcraft. it gets better. i could literally go into forge, build a church, find a girl on xbox live. if we wanted to get married, it could be done over halo 3.
now here's something less nerdy and more entertaining.
2.) certain states (Ohio, Georgia, and California just to name a few) allow for something called a "proxy marriage". like the name suggests, the groom can sign a paper and have someone else attend the ceremony in his stead while still being legally married to the bride. not even having to attend a ceremony. i then asked him if it was possible to trick the groom into signing one of these papers before the marriage to which he replied yes. so if you wanted to be a complete prick and your state of residence allows this procedure, you could fool someones fiance into signing one of these documents and legally marry his wife. wait 1 year, 5 years, 50 years then approach them. show it and prove that you are in fact the rightful husband.
so. standard.
there really is no point to this thread beyond that. i just found those two facts endlessly entertaining. i was literally laughing myself into a stupor for 20 minutes over it.
