Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema to produce "The Hobbit"

“Peter Jackson has proven himself as the filmmaker who can bring the extraordinary imagination of Tolkien to life and we full heartedly agree with the fans worldwide who know he should be making ‘The Hobbit,’” said Sloan, MGM’s Chairman and CEO. “Now that we are all in agreement on ‘The Hobbit,’ we can focus on assembling the production team that will capture this phenomenal tale on film.”

Bob Shaye, New Line Co-Chairman and Co-CEO comments, “We are very pleased we have been able to resolve our differences, and that Peter and Fran will be actively and creatively involved with ‘The Hobbit’ movies. We know they will bring the same passion, care and talent to these films that they so ably accomplished with ‘The Lord of the Rings’ Trilogy.”
“Peter is a visionary filmmaker, and he broke new ground with ‘The Lord of the Rings,’” notes Michael Lynne, New Line Co-Chairman and Co-CEO.

“We’re delighted he’s back for ‘The Hobbit’ films and that the Tolkien saga will continue with his imprint. We greatly appreciate the efforts of Harry Sloan, who has been instrumental in helping us reach our new accord.”
The two “Hobbit” films – “The Hobbit” and its sequel – are scheduled to be shot simultaneously, with pre-production beginning as soon as possible. Principal photography is tentatively set for a 2009 start, with the intention of “The Hobbit” release slated for 2010 and its sequel the following year, in 2011.

The Oscar-winning, critically-acclaimed LOTR Trilogy grossed nearly $3 billion worldwide at the box-office. In 2003, “Return of the King” swept the Academy Awards, winning all of the eleven categories in which it was nominated, including Best Picture – the first ever Best Picture win for a fantasy film. The Trilogy’s production was also unprecedented at the time.

So, yeah, who else is looking forward to "The Hobbit" as much as I am?

Re: Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema to produce "The Hobbit"

Yup. In my opinion, it is better than the three LotR books.

Re: Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema to produce "The Hobbit"

I agree with Tsuyu, the Hobbit is the greatest peice of litterature ever written!

If they do as miserably as they did with the LoTR-movies im going to be royaly ****ed.

Re: Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema to produce "The Hobbit"

I reckon they did an outstanding job with the LotR series... I dont know why they have to put in into two movies though... it's not even an inch thickO.o

Re: Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema to produce "The Hobbit"

ooo I can't wait for this, I loved The Lord of the Rings moviess. My girlfriend tried to get me to read LOTR but I didn't, she finally got me to at least read The Hobbit and I did and loved it!! Can't wait!... but 2010 is soooooo far away. :(

BTW anyone figure how they are going to make two movies with it???

Re: Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema to produce "The Hobbit"

Yeah it seems quite strange, seeing as how the "sequel" to The Hobbit is the LotR books...hmmm..

Re: Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema to produce "The Hobbit"

I thought the beginning of the hobbit was boring. Couldn't keep me interested. :P

Re: Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema to produce "The Hobbit"

So long as they hold off on the Elvish singing and endless bouts of poetry, it should be good. But they will have to bring back Ian McKellen and Ian Holm or it won't fit with the LOTR films - they showed Ian Holm in a flashback finding the ring, so they can't possibly get away with using some random bloke to play the part.

Looking forward to seeing Smaug :w00t:

Re: Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema to produce "The Hobbit"

Theres already a Hobbit film....:unsure::lol:

But yeah, they definitely need to bring back the old (or is it new?) Gandalf, but I think they could get away with a new Bilbo I don't see why they would, excluding personal reasons, but who cares about the actors... They get paid don't they?!

Re: Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema to produce "The Hobbit"

I'm a stickler for continuity - hence why I despise the new Star Wars films...

Why I despised Land before time when I was a kid

Re: Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema to produce "The Hobbit"

That film used to make me cry...

I just reckon if you are going to make a film which is a prequel to something you made already, then use the same people who were featured in flashbacks or it just looks shoddy.

Re: Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema to produce "The Hobbit"

They even had the cheek to change the old ones with the new Annakin... Good thing they changed it back later...

Re: Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema to produce "The Hobbit"

The Star Wars films 1, 2 and 3 were appalling because despite being set in a time before the other ones, they had better technology, more colourful and advanced homeworlds/spaceships, a better use of the Force and, above all else, diabolical acting all round...

And that ultimate abomination known as Jar Jar Binks

There was already a LotR Film as well The Lord of the Rings (1978 film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Made by the same guy who made Wizards of which the main character, Avatar, is my avatar ;)

Re: Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema to produce "The Hobbit"

I knew it was only a matter of time before this happened, everyone always tells me it was the best book and i liked the movies so id be interested to see how this turns out.

Oh what shall we do
With the funny little things?
They have no wings...

Re: Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema to produce "The Hobbit"

I think it's going to be pretty good. The one thing I missed out on in LotR was Tom Bombadil. They left out one of my favourite characters:(

Re: Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema to produce "The Hobbit"

I have the whole collection of Lotr movies sitting at home, unwatched... :( See, this is what video games does to you! I can't sit down in front of the TV without a controller in hand any more.
