Please Help Me! I'm Desperate!

It started last night, and my internet came up in the middle of the night, and it said stuff about viruses and info, this happened before, on my old comp, turned out I had a trojan, and eventually, my computer crashed. That was why I was gone for so long. Now, I closed it all, and started a system scan. I use McAfee, and I don't know if it sucks or not. Please tell me if it does. Anyways, when i got home, about 15 minutes ago, I was listening to music, and my screen went blue and said something bout an error and failing, and it restarted. Now it keeps asking me about virus scanners and such, and telling me to optimize my computer with a download, when my site advisor is red. Duh. Now if you could post any free programs to help or remove this problem, or any help at all on this subject, that would be appreciated. Also, could you tell me with your experience, does this sound like a trojan?

Re: Please Help Me! I'm Desperate!

Well, what I usually do when it gets to that point is rebuild. Format all the drives and restart from scratch, it's probably too far gone anyway. It can be fun... except when you have to get all your programs again...

Re: Please Help Me! I'm Desperate!

Download Spybot - Search and Destroy, and Ad-Aware, as if you haven't , they will probably find 100+ things that they can fix for you.

A free and decent antivirus is AVG, which can be found at Free Software Downloads and Software Reviews - Download.com under the antivirus section.

If you want to pay for a top notch antivirus, choose NOD32. Of all the virus scanners I have used, it was the most watchful and least system-intensive.

And above all, DO NOT click yes to any program that wants to install a "virus scanner" that is not a recognized name brand.

But seriously, Ad-Aware and Spybot will help tremendously.

Re: Please Help Me! I'm Desperate!

It only started acting up yesterday and it was on all night and only that thing came up. I am so boned.

I already have ad-aware, I'll go get spybot. And I'm definantly not stupid enough to hit yes, but thanks for the heads-up :)

What does spybot do? I just don't wanna uninstall McAfee because of the site advisor.

Re: Please Help Me! I'm Desperate!

I use McAffee and it works quite well. Slow, but thorough.

Re: Please Help Me! I'm Desperate!

Ahh... thanks for the reassurance. And my Ad-Aware just finished, and there was something like "virtuo" blah blah blah, and turned out to be malware, hopefully that was it, and its gone now...

Well everything i was going to say has been said right there. +rep

Re: Please Help Me! I'm Desperate!

I have a virus too, it disabled my Task Manager. AVG was unable to fix it so I guess a format will have to do it.

Re: Please Help Me! I'm Desperate!

I haven't read the replies as I'm in a hurry but here's my advice:

Download a decent Anti-Virus program; try AVG - it's free and does the trick. I've never heard good things about McAfee.

Then try installing some Anti-Spyware software. Start with Spybot: Search and Destroy then move onto AdAware. I don't know if AdAware is still considered the best Anti-Spyware software out there since it's been forever since I actually installed anything on my PC - that wasn't Age of Mytology - but AdAware was pretty pimp last time I used it.

I could be wrong, too, but my guess would be that the blue screen you witnessed was the dreaded "Blue Screen of Death" - Microsoft likes to keep you on your toes and make your system lock up every now and then. Consider switching to something less "Windowsy" like Apple and their Mac OS X Leapord Operating System. I'm just waiting for my notebook to die then I'll be heading straight over to the online Apple store and throwing money at them so they'll send a sexy little MacBook Pro or MacBook Air my way.

Re: Please Help Me! I'm Desperate!

I now the issue is solved, but for further readers:

You can also donwload Avast Home. It's a free program, not trial or anything, which updates daily and works fine with me. It also take up very little power so its sutiable for gaming.

It has P2P protection, firewall, networkwalls, mail and IM protection and ofcourse it also has a fast virusscan. (Also anti-rootkits...).

avast! antivirus - high security and protection from malware with anti-spyware and anti-rootkit software built in

Turns out, it's still there. The nasty bugger, I've been looking on the lavasoft site, and I'm almost there, but the damn fixwareout doesn't recognise vista, I'm currently going to run it in compatability mode.

That didn't work...

Do you know exactly what kind of malware it is?

Re: Please Help Me! I'm Desperate!

It says Virtumonde

Re: Please Help Me! I'm Desperate!

I looked at it and it kinda helps, I think spybot deleted everything except the registry files, but I'm not sure. And I don't really wanna mess with these files, so is it possible to back up my computer and access at a later date? And could you post how?

Re: Please Help Me! I'm Desperate!

i thik ive got a solution. when you startup your computer, itll load all the files and whatnot, and it will also have options, like f8 to change startup mode, boot device order, etc. i think you press f11, or whichever button says system recovery. once youre there it shouldnt be hard to figure out

i you have that option on your comp, it will wipe out all files, and reload eerything as if it were being used for the first time

Re: Please Help Me! I'm Desperate!

Yeah, I'd kinda like to keep my files  And Yeah I remember the F8 thing, and there is an option to set your comp back to an earlier date...

Cool... 400 posts...

Re: Please Help Me! I'm Desperate!

I think I got rid of it, used spybot with the Registry editor open, and I scanned again, nothing there, reopened registry editor, and the files were gone, gonna reboot and check again. I'll add rep to all the helpers when I get back on. Thanks! I hope to god that was the end of it...
