Project Natal.

No Strings (or Controllers) Attached.

Introducing Project Natal, a revolutionary new way to play: no controller required. See a ball? Kick it, hit it, trap it or catch it. If you know how to move your hands, shake your hips or speak you and your friends can jump into the fun -- the only experience needed is life experience.
"For us, this E3 is about breaking down barriers – between generations, between games and entertainment, and most importantly, between dreamers and the future – in a way only Xbox 360 can."
DON MATTRICK

"This is a pivotal moment that will carry with it a wave of change, the ripples of which will reach far beyond video games"
STEVEN SPIELBERG

If what Project Natal and Microsoft claim is true, then the massive hype around this project will be all justified.

  • The 3D motion detector will pick up up to 4 people and will give them the ability to game without a controller, headset or keyboard and even sign into XBOX LIVE by walking by.
  • The camera can scan objects e.g skateboards for use in-game.
  • There will be something for everyone - action packed adventures to creativity filled activities.
  • There will be a built-in voice recognition system which will make game-play a lot more interactive.
  • Chat with your friends across XBOX LIVE with the camera and voice recognition system.
  • Flick through the marketplace with a gesture-based UI.
"The only experience you need
is life experience."

Re: Project Natal.

That does sound cool.

Re: Project Natal.

Totally had no idea what everybody was going on about when "Project Natal" was mentioned. It was only when I checked out the video on the XBL Marketplace that it started to make sense... :P

Sounds pretty interesting but, truth be told, I'm happy playing my standard games, with my standard controller. I'd probably be crapping myself with excitement if I were younger and not so old-fashioned but the only thing to really excite me about E3 so far is the announcement of Left 4 Dead 2. :P

Although, from what I saw of that "Milo" demo presented by Peter Molyneux, I did think, "Cool."

Re: Project Natal.

^ I thought Milo was amazing but he creeped me out.
O jeez Lionheads going to make a bunch of prostitutes with Natal that wewd be real weird.

Re: Project Natal.

Im happy with the normal gaming experience but also happy to see companies stepping up a gear with this sort of technology. Im intrigued as to what they can do with it. This announcement actually made the papers and has got a lot of interest behind it.

Re: Project Natal.

Yeah it was top on Google news today not reakky the papers tho

Yeah, I think natal is taking gaming out gaming, if I want to kick go kick a ball, draw a picture or skateboard, I'd go outside and do those things, possibly get some human interaction.

Re: Project Natal.

Yeah but you cant fight a samurai or shoot up a street.

This confirms Zune coming to x-box too.

Epic, Bungie playing with Project Natal

E3 2009 Q&A: Microsoft Game Studios head Phil Spencer talks about the origins of Microsoft's motion-sensing device--and how two top developers have been looking at its technology for "quite some time."
More.

Columbine disagrees :P

Re: Project Natal.

^Zune is gehy, motion games will besick but only i its more advanced than wave hand, jog in place, be gehy and exercise

Re: Project Natal.

I wish I hadn't sold my Nintendo 64 but I'm hoping that technology coming out in the near future like Project Natal will take my mind off of it. I'm sure it will, games like Prototype probably will too.

Re: Project Natal.

I still have my N64 with Zelda and Banjo Kazooie

Re: Project Natal.

This looks crap. Sorry, but I'm not interested in the slightest in waving my arms around like an idiot and all but dislocating myself. If I want to do that, I'll get a Wii.

I'm sure this will be all very popular and what have you, but I'm happy with the old fashioned controller set-up...

Re: Project Natal.

Me too but there's no harm in expanding what the Xbox is capable of, eh?

It may entice some kids who are interested in that sort of thing from getting a Wii and instead joining in on the Xbox franchise which probably has better technology anyway. We can only wait and see.

Re: Project Natal.

Still no idea what Project Natal is, and tbh I don't care enough to research it...*ahem*..google it..

Though I did watch a video on that Milo chap, what the hell is all that about?
It looks like a replacement for having real friends

"Hey! Are you tired of your only friends being trapped inside the world of xbox live? Are you tired of having to type or wear a headset every time you want a conversation? Are you afraid of sunlight? - introducing.. MILO!"

completely agree with Angel's comment above, I'm always going to want a control pad or keyboard for my games
I hope the control-pad generation doesn't get left in the dark

Re: Project Natal.

The only real advantage to Milo that I can see is if it were to be used in a child therapy situation or when helping those with something like autism or learning difficulties/behavioural disorders.

If they could make it free and accessible to health professionals, carers, social workers, parents of children within a particular demographic and the like then I can see the benefits. Otherwise it's just a smart gimmick with no real point to it.

If Natal were to replace the more traditional way of gaming, would it exclude the physically disabled? I know a couple of people who love gaming but are restricted in their body movements. The Wii doesn't need all that frantic moving about (although people do it anyway until they realise it works just as well with a slight movement of the wrist or whatever) but Natal looks like it requires much more energy and movement to operate it.

Re: Project Natal.

I don't see a kid improving his socializing skills by talking to a piece of software.... I don't really feel that Natal gives me something I don't already have, I have a wii and my xbox already have a media center that doesn't require that I wave my arms around to circle through my photos and videoes. It's pretty pointless actually.

Re: Project Natal.

Yeah, it's pointless, but it's pretty cool, and it's another nail in Nintendo's coffin. Now Xbopx just needs a fitness game to convert all the fat housewives, but i really hope thats as far as casual would go. I don't want 360 to go under the casual tide as well :(
