Quality Vs. Popularity

Can you provide an example so we understand what you mean?

I'm not going to mention any particular names, because that would be an opinion. But lets say you have a band. Your band wants to make it big, so you put all your time, money, and effort into making the very best album you possibly can. Your band finishes the album and is is amazing. Its a huge hit and copies fly off the shelves. So now your famous and rolling money and have millions of fans. But it doesn't end there, you have really only begun. But now you already have an established loyal fan base. Are you really going to put all your time, money, and effort into making the very best album you possibly can again? Probably not, you really don't have to. You just make an album that's good, and the fans like it. You don't have to try so hard anymore. So now you only have to make things that are "good enough", and overtime the standard is gradually lowered, and face it, your running out of ideas. But your still successful, and still have plenty of fans, but they all have to admit that your first album was the best.

Now, this is not what must happen, and its not necessarily what will happen, but is it not unreasonable? Its just like with getting a job, when you are applying, you work really hard so you will get the job. But once you get the job, you don't have to work quite so hard, and you begin to relax as you get used to it. Now, the quality of your work doesn't start to suck, your just not being forced to give it 100% all of the time.

Entropy. Things deteriorate over time, even the quality of peoples newer work. This is not the absolute, there is no such thing, but it is the commonality.
