Question about Halo 3 multiplayer

I was being used as tech support for my sister and her friends. They were trying to play Halo 3 local, splitscreen multiplayer. Every time they tried, it gave an error message about needing a Live account.

WHY? I tried repeatedly and couldn't get it to work. We don't have any current Gold subscriptions, but that shouldn't have a damn thing to do with offline games, should it?

It affects offline games? That's ridonkulous. Can you sign in with a Guest account?

That's what I tried. Everyone as guest, everyone as guest but one, everyone with a profile. None of them worked.

Are you sure you weren't in the Xbox Live lobby? To play splitscreen you need to go to custom games rather than multiplayer.

Admittedly, I was dumb enough to be in matchmaking at first. Then I switched, tried everything again, and it still didn't work.

My sister, to my dismay, was in custom games from the beginning. It didn't work for her, either.

Hmmmm, curioser and curioser.

When you start it up, does it pop up with a little flashing message? I think I've had that before. Are you connected to Xbox Live or are you not plugged in?

Pretty sure that my silver subscription is still up and running.

I suspect that after I went to custom games it was still thinking I was trying to play on Live. When the other players tried to join it brought up a little square divided into quadrants with "Press A to Join." I don't remember that popping up for offline play last time I did it-- wasn't that the thing for Live?

You have to change the network (I think that's what it is) to Local. You may not be in the matchmaking lobby, but you can still have the setting on Xbox Live.

The little square, I think, comes up for everything, but it's been a while since I've played offline multi.

If none of that works, try unplugging your cable and disconnecting altogether, it might just think you're trying to access Live.

I'm so glad that all of this troubleshooting is stuff I've already done. Makes me feel so secure in my abilities.

Admittedly, I haven't bothered unplugging, because my sister's friends left several hours ago and I, personally, have no desire to be playing Halo 3 multiplayer, online or off.
