I don't know why I'd want to be feared. Unless there's a mutated-alien-zombie-ninja-pirate-robot-goat in front of me, I like to have positive attention.
If possible, I think anybody would choose a combination of both. However, if there is no gray area, and you had to either be loved or feared, I can't imagine why anybody would choose to be feared.
I think by fear I meant Vlad the Impaler style, in other words You could put a priceless gold cup in the middle of town for all to admire but NOBODY would dare steal it out of fear of what you could do to them.
I'd MUCH rather be feared by many and loved by a select few. Love indicates a mutual feeling and in any situation being manipulated by a smattering of emotion from both sides, then there is no guarantee that it would be me who was completely in control. Fear is very much one-sided in that someone who fears me will do as I say in order to keep me from shooting them in the eye with a rifle. So yes, I'd much rather be feared.
