If the plural of mouse is mice, shouldn't the plural of spouse be spice?

Yea man, the English language is strange like that, like with the words tough and dough. If tough is pronounced as tuff, why isn't dough pronounced as duff? And if dough is pronounced as Doe (as in the name John Doe), why isn't tough pronounced like the word toe?

Somebody must have been drunk or playing a practical joke on us all when coming up with the English language.

To be fair its a mixture of french, danish, latin & norse. All countries famous for getting ****ed.

Long story short: language of origin.

Mouse is Germanic in origin, while spouse is an Italic word that entered the English language through French influence.

Google "the i-mutation" for a more detailed explanation, as I am too lazy.

A bit longer: Spouse was assimilated into the English language long after the i-mutation, and as is traditionally the case with French nouns, is pluralized with 's'.

*rolls away*

EDIT: Common sense explanation: spice already has meaning and is unrelated to spouse.

I said gooses, mouses, fishes, deers, etc. up until I was around ten. I didn't know the word spouse yet but I probably would have said spouses, which is at least correct.

As much as I admire and appreciate logic and reason, common sense has no place in threads like this. ;)

I don't have any fun or interesting random random thoughts. Best I get is the usual facepalm-worthy quips taking someone else's words out of context.
