What's Abarat? I've never heard of them. Fantasy, I presume, but what type, by who, about what generally, et the rest?

The Books of Abarat by Clive Barker ... anything by Clive Barker is excellent, he's one of my favourite authors...
Weaveworld was awesome, he wrote the Imagicka series, Cabal, Coldheart Canyon, The Hellbound Heart... I could go on and on... you know, just some of the greatest novels ever... :ninja:

Re: Read any good books lately?

Never heard of him, or the books-- which is not that common, since I've read a great deal of sci-fi and fantasy. I'll look into him. To the link!

Edit:

Hmm... I don't know. That might be good or it might be one of those books that is just plain stupid. Guess I'll have to try to read it. To the library's website!

Edit:

I ordered it. It should get here in 2-3 days and I'll tell you what I think after I read it (It'll have to wait till I read: Death of a Salesman, Flow My Tears the Policeman Said, and reread the Minority Report anthology and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep/Blade Runner all for English, so it might take awhile)

have you heard of Hellraiser? you know, the movie, with Pinhead and all that juiciness?
he did that... it was based off of his novel The Hellbound Heart...
I can't believe I'm living in a world where people don't know Clive Barker...

In terms of his fantasy works, I would honestly recommend Weaveworld as your first look at him... or possibly Imagicka... he's so amazing ^_^

Re: Read any good books lately?

Nope, never heard of him. But then, have you heard of Phillip Dick? Or Timothy Zahn? Or Brian Daley? Or Garth Nix? (Yeah, you've probably heard of some of them. I just listed a lot in hopes you would have not heard of one.)

To my oh-so-eternal regret, the only Barker I had heard of previously was Bob... and then only because of "Happy Gilmore".

Anyone read some of Lovecraft's works? I've been wanting to for a looooong time now...
Lovecraft was one of the greatest macabre writers of all time. I am very excited to find someone who is interested in him! He has influenced so many authors, and many people don't even know who he is. I suggest reading the penguin classics editions of his work, edited/selected by S.T. Joshi, THE authority on Lovecraft. Those will get you started.
If you like what you see I suggest reading up on him as a person also, very interesting.

well, I just thought that seeing as how the Hellraiser movies are one of the most widely known horror series in film, you might have heard of them... I guess not... at any rate, you should really check out some of Barker's work...

Re: Read any good books lately?

Yep, I am-- I just ordered the first Abarat one, remember.

Um... well, you should have said it was horror. I mean, up until seventh grade or so, maybe even eighth (5-4 years ago) even "Jurassic Park" was too much for me. I hate horror books and movies only a little less than romance. The most horror I can handle are things like Jurassic Park, Congo, Prey-- all Michael Crichton, yes, but I couldn't think of any other horror books I've read.

How much of what he writes is horror?

Hellraiser is a horror movie... but I never said he wrote horror novels... his books are mainly fantasy novels... of a far darker variety than normal, but still fantasy...
Hellraiser was an adaptation of his own work, and was only loosely based on the original work...
but seeing as you classified Jurassic Park, an action thriller, as horror, I'm guessing you scare easily, in which case you may not like Barker's adult works, or his darker stuff... which is why to stay on the safe side, I initially recommended Weaveworld...

Re: Read any good books lately?

I'm waiting to see if he'll write more in the Abarat series or if he's done with it...I'm re-reading Run Baby Run by Nicky Cruz right now...well, I would be if Andy, Steve and Matty weren't currently hogging the living room and hurling abuse at those alien thingies in Gears of War...

When did Forest Gump have a baby? O.o

Re: Read any good books lately?

Took me a little bit longer than it should have done to get that joke...

Re: Read any good books lately?

Well in all honestly it wasn't very funny. Just that I love Forest Gump and I've recently watched it, so it was still in my short time memory... or something.

Re: Read any good books lately?

No, I used to class "Jurassic Park" as horror. I don't anymore. And I never really had problems with books, except for the ghost and psycho-killer varieties.

I do scare easily, but then if I let that stop me from reading things... well, I'd just be really stupid.

Hot damn, Jurrasic Park "IS" scary as hell. That's what I remember of it after all these years that has passes since I saw it as a wee brat!

Re: Read any good books lately?

Yeah, the first time I saw it I was really little and it scared the crap out of me. Later, I liked the books and the movies (there is next to no relation between said books and movies, by the way.)

Re: Read any good books lately?

I'm trying to remember this book I read not so long ago...had weird goings-on that made people choke to death on moths...freaked the hell outta me...

Frank Perretti writes some good supernatural thrillers - The Oath is a personal favourite and Monster is one to do with genetic splicing and the effects thereof...

Re: Read any good books lately?

Saw a book about Chernobyl one day, written by some female Russian author. It`s actually a collection of peoples memories living there when the accident happened. Thought it might be worth reading and I probably will read it someday...
