Recommend a movie

Well, I've just finished watching both Resevoir Dogs AND Pulp Fiction and as my first sample of Tarantino's work, I have to say that I'm thoroughly impressed. I'm currently in a movie watching mood, so I was thinking if anyone could recommend any other movies for me.

My taste is pretty simple. I love good crime movies, the aforementioned, as well as Lock Stock, Snatch and the Bank Job come to mind.

Also, I love a good comedy. I like Ricky Gervais, in particular (I'm thinking of going out to see his new movie, the Invention of Lying. Looks kick ass).

Damn, that reminds me. Got to go get X-Men.

Damn, at the time of writing this, it's coming out in my head as Samuel L. Jackson's voice.

This is some real GOURMET sh!t!

Smokin Aces

Shoot em up - great action comedy with nice carrot-fatalities.

The Chumscrubber - Donnie Darko`ish style

I just finished Zombieland and I loved it (I think you`ve seen it, though).

I watched Hellboy 2: The Golden Army yesterday and I was quite impressed. The first one was an OK movie, but I really liked the second one (so if you haven`t seen it yet I recommend it)

Just a couple from the top of my head.

Re: Recommend a movie

Well I`m not an action junkie in particular. I was just recommending Arseface some easy watching (The Chumscrubber might not fall into that category, though).

John, if you can find and if you have interest, I recommend Seksmisija (Sex Mission) from Poland - it`s a nice comedy about the last two men on Earth. Old movie, but pretty nice.

Also, I haven`t seen it myself yet, but in 2002, Russia made a movie called Russian Ark - the whole movie, 90 minutes, is taken in one continuous shot. "A journey through time" as they say, planning to watch it someday.

Edit: I was searching through best foreign movie Oscar award winners/nominees in Wikipedia one day. Although I was searching for Russian/Soviet movies in particular, I think you could find something good there. That is, of course, if you trust the Academy Awards  (never understood why they are called Academy Awards).

Right now I'm in a foreign movie phase, particularly movies about East Germany set in a time before the fall of the wall. Most recently, I watched Das Leben der Anderen. It would be boring for you action junkies as people don't die every thirty seconds, but it is a nice enough story worth a watch if you're into that sort of thing. Would definitely recommend checking it out in IMDB/Wikipedia first - just so you know what it is before spending money on it, as I highly doubt that there is but maybe one person (other than me) on these forums who would actually enjoy it.

I'm not too into foreign movies. I can handle subtitles and all, but I like not having to look at the screen.

I will check both those out.

Re: Recommend a movie

Public Enemies? Gangster film with Johnny Depp following John Dillinger I think? Not chronologically or historically accurate.

The Godfather trilogy!!!!

Re: Recommend a movie

Godfather! Movies I've been meaning to watch for ages.

I'll also take a look at Public Enemies.

Re: Recommend a movie

I really quite like Blade Runner, Shaun of the Dead is a must for anyone that likes Zombieland, if you like crime films, maybe RockNRolla.

Re: Recommend a movie

Defiance and 21 are great movies.

Funny People is really good too, I just watched it a few days ago. Many people said that it was a big disappointment, and that it wasn't as good as other Judd Apatow movies, but f*ck those people.

Pineapple Express is good too if you like stoner comedies.

Re: Recommend a movie

I was actually dissapointed in Pineapple Express. I thought it had a lot of comic potential, but it didn't really go anywhere.

I'm also a huge fan of Will Ferrell. Step Brothers was a ****er. I haven't seen his one with the dinosaur (can't remember what it's called). Is it good?

Re: Recommend a movie

I just watched Tuskegee Airmen-- the old HBO movie from '95 (my library had it) and I really liked it.

Aside from that, just saw the new Sherlock Holmes and that was AWEOMELY hysterical.

I think they're given by the... Academy of Fine Arts or something like that. But I have no idea who that is or anything. EDIT: Nope. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Basically a professional society, like the American Helicopter Society or the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, but it's by invitation only and more focused on "aww, we're so awesome" honor-type stuff.

Re: Recommend a movie

It really is. Even cooler, it seems really faithful to the original. Watson is back to is wounded-vet gunman badass doctorness, Holmes kicks ass as per usual, and so on. I didn't read the Arthur Conan Doyle stories that much, but I can recognize that a lot of the adaptations I've seen in the past have really killed the badass vibe. Not this one.

Even if it does make Holmes and Watson seem as gay as... something that's very gay. Which is very funny. Leading right to "this movie is funny as ****." Especially the bit where the evil plot is to invade the US.
