im fixing to head to westcliff and try to get the red dragon... any suggestions you guys could give me to make my life easier?

Master Clockwork pistol works best.

Reform westcliff, return from spire, aim for the head, fail first few times, get frustrated, accept that you are no good at the shooting range, come back later, get the hang of it, win red dragon. Thats how I did it. Eventually everyone gets better at it, just keep trying.
