Rehab for Game Addicts

UK, March 18, 2010 - A new service has opened offering help and rehabilitation for those severely addicted to games.

We all know someone who is accused of playing an unhealthy amount of games and often sacrifices their social and/or love life to indulge the habit. In most cases that someone is us and it's not really that unhealthy. However, for those that really do have a gaming problem, help is now at hand.

London-based newspaper The Metro reports on Dr. Richard Graham's new rehab service at the Capio Nightingale Hospital which aims to treat 15-17 year olds addicted to gaming, the internet and mobile phones. He believes the current practice in dealing with these problems is outdated and looks too much at treatment for substance abuse for guidance.

If you're wondering what would qualify you to be checked into rehab, here's a useful barometer -Dr Graham's patients who when asked to shut down their computers freaked out at their parents so much the police had to be called to diffuse the argument. Inspiring stuff.

I actually approve of this. Video games can become an addiction, just like anything else. Regulating it is key.

Its not an addiction, its a way of life!

And yet, if the same person spent the exact same amount of time on something else, say a sport or art hobby, then it would be perfectly alright. Not to say that some people don't play to many video games, they do, its just that its because its video games that its considered a problem by most people.

Tell that to those Koreans who literally killed themselves playing MMOs and neglecting their needs of survival. People would react the same way to any other hobby, like an artist who has an unhealthy obsession with drawing that he locks himself up in his room so he can draw all day and everyday and shuts himself away from society, those close will begin to worry and want him to seek out help (or they'll do it for him).

Or a weightlifter who gets obsessed with weightlifting to the point where he ruins his body because he would never allow it time to recover properly, many will view that as a problem and not a "Oh my God, he's so dedicated! What an amazing person! :w00t:"
