The next Xbox (codenamed Durango) devkits were sent to developers last month according to the latest issue of Xbox World Magazine & Twitter. It was reported that the Durango kits that were seen don't resemble the final hardware in appearance, but the hardware inside is representative of the machine you can expect to see released in late 2013. The Magazines sources have also said that Durango's devkit is powered by a state of the art 16-core IBM Power PC CPU with a graphics processor which is on par with AMD's Radeon HD 7000-series graphics cards. The mag had the following to say on the report...
It's a ridiculous amount of power for a games machine - too much power, even. But remember, Kinect 2 could chew up four whole cores tracking multiple players right down to their fingertips, so it'll need a lot of power.

I think 16 cores is a little O.T.T. most quad cores in desktop pcs arnt even in full use yet and especially by games, but the graphics being used will be a good boost for the machine.

Quite the hardware, overheating prevention better be the #1 priority this time around.

While that could be true, another rumour is that the next Xbox will require, and yes, I said -REQUIRE- an always on internet connection to even use it. Apparently it's an anti-piracy measure, but to be honest, if that was the case, it'd be an anti-customer measure.

Id heard that but it wouldnt be feasible really as a lot of console gamers dont hook their console up to the Internet. Granted most do but would alienate too many people to require them to be connected to the Internet to even play their games.

Piracy is like a hydra. You cut a head and ten others will spawn. All systems can be cracked, therefore they can be pirated. Solutions could go from your good ol' solid modchip to as far as emulating Xbox LIVE's authentication servers in a local manner to ensure that you can play anytime.

I don't see that making any sense, so what happens to someone who has a poor connection and frequently disconnects while playing a game? Are they going to get booted to dashboard and be unable to play? :/

Like Dark Intellect said, you can chop off one source of piracy, but many more will spawn its place, and when people find out that piracy is a much less painful/restrictive experience then expect more to follow suit (as history has proven). I wish companies would realize this and stop wasting their time by inadvertently screwing over the paying customer.

2 years of my gaming life was spent in this scenario thanks to Wanadoo/Orange internet. Just booted back to game lobbies, id never wish anyone to have to suffer that. *Shakes Fist*

So long as they make it a good solid machien and not brittle and fragile like the 360 I'll be happy.

"The Wii U CPU is designed by IBM. It is described by IBM as an "all-new, Power-based microprocessor", the processor is a multi-core design manufactured at 45 nm with an eDRAM cache. Although neither Nintendo nor IBM has revealed detailed specifications, such as the number of cores, clock rate, or cache sizes, references to the chip containing "a lot" of eDRAM and "the same processor technology found in Watson" indicate that the processor shares some characteristics with IBM's POWER7 processor, which powers the Watson computer system ..."

Remember Watson? No? Well...

just puttin' this out there...
