Ever noticed as you get older you start to like things that you previously either disliked or associated with 'older' people. Make a Chilli Con Carne the other night and had added some red wine to it (nothing out of the ordinary there) however I poured myself a glass of it. Then while eating it my girlfriend said she had bought me some beers that were on offer at the shop and they were old Ale. It was only when I was sitting there drinking red wine and old ale I began to wonder 'When did this happen?' I mean when did I start drinking these 'mature' drinks?

To make matters worse I have been working lots of overtime lately and went into work one morning and really needed something to wake me up so I had a coffee (I dont drink coffee). Since then I have had a cup every day at work and my girlfriend has even bought some for the house (we never have coffee in the house). Later that night after multiple trips outside to the bin and out to feed animals etc and getting things out of the car and slipping my trainers (sneakers to the Americians here) on and off so many times I started to think how practicial it would be to have a pair of slippers for around the house (never owned any in my life).

Then at the end of the night and it being cold at the time and trying to save some money by keeping the heating off I started to think it would be practicial to own a dressing gown too to walk around the house in after a shower etc. All these things are things ive either never liked, never owned or associated with old people and now im starting to like them or the idea too...

My god im getting old...

So anyone else hit these stages yet...?

The fact I find myself saying too often "Boy, they sure don't make 'em like they used to.."

I enjoy looking forward to dull evenings, humming along to elevator & on-hold phone music .. and I actually enjoy watching the weather channel. I hardly go anywhere on a Saturday night anymore and I often decline party invitations, I prefer to just stay in and relax or to do something around the house. Something I never thought I'd ever end up doing is decorating the house and keeping a plentiful quantity of plants in my home. The ex-wife loved watching HGTV... it's actually not a bad channel...

I hate it when people make so much noise at anytime of the day, I have no idea when this started happening.. it just.. happened.

If this isn't a sign I'm starting to get old, then I don't know what is. I'll keep you updated when my back begins to go out.

Perhaps your associations are simply a bit off. I've been using a dressing gown since... always and it's an invention of pure genius - I mean, you are practically naked, yet not cold, how awesome is that. I used to wear slippers all the time, now I just don't have a pair; otherwise I would. Red wine, well, it's just acquired taste. I most likely will never like wine (having had quite a lot of it recently), but I can also tell you I used to not like cheese or mayo - now I do.
I've always disliked unnecessary ruckus; and I've always been a plant nerd...

Wait, maybe it simply means I was old since birth. Benjamin.... Button...

Yeah ive found myself very rarely going to the pub, in fact ive only been a handful of times in months. Started as a way to save money and now I find myself preferring to stay in regardless. I like nothing more than settling down on the 360 with a couple of beers (or as it is now a bottle of wine or some old ales). Found myself already saying 'Back in the day' and things like that all the time.

I've always been a plant nerd...

Another thing, I hate gardening yet I now have a mint plant, Tomato Plant, Chilli Plant, and numerous herbs. Again it started as a way to save cash as I can grow my own etc but I find some satisfaction in knowing im growing them so almost as if they taste better knowing I grew them. Also enjoy cooking, something which I never did before. The extent of my cooking was a microwave burger or a frozen pizza in the oven but now I cook all sorts of different dishes.

Well the other day I said "Music these days is utter crap." and my sister turned to me and said "You sound like your dad."

But hey, I'm still 17.

Morning Wood.

I love Morning Wood, its the only thing that gets me excited about the day.

I did have an incident when I was flatting this year with 2 other mates.
For some reason we were getting carpet in our lounge and we got really excited about it, it was really weird.. I mean, excited about carpet?? I never want that to happen again.

Don't feel bad. The music these days actually is utter crap.

What if a band you liked made a new song, would that make that song crap because it is counted in the timeframe of "these days"?

Hehe, I thought i'd be a d*ck and point that out. There is alot of good music coming out and alot of ****, its just that the **** music is put all over the TV, Radio, Advertisement and internetzz, so we dont have a choice but to listen to it..

I think it starts when you stop being a teenager. The first stages are when you draw that line between yourself and those in an earlier stage in life. For me that's high schoolers (that's college to non Americans). They grew up in a world of bad cartoons, hip hop radio, and Justin Beiber. As I grow more distant from their pop culture, I'm getting older in their eyes. A 21 year old is already an outsider to a high schooler. I know that if I was 17 I would be a little alienated.

Now that I've been separated from that world, I'm a lot more open minded to things that quite honestly I wouldn't have been caught dead doing as a high schooler. Now I find myself enjoying books and taking time to read one before bed. I'm more aware of my own mortality and I can't just pile on the junk food like I used to. I find myself liking button-down shirts more and t-shirts less (blasphemy to my 17 year old self). I have a larger drive to succeed these days and with that comes resourcefulness. Of course I still enjoy sitting on my ass and playing video games for hours on end - but after a while I start to wonder what's something productive I could start doing instead for a while. This is HUGELY different from how I used to be.

I'm sure it'll only get worse. 5 years down the road I could easily see myself going through something similar to you Drakan. Everyone makes peace with it and accept it into their life to a degree.

You have always liked that, just never tried it maybe? I mean, a lot of things might also come from the standards that our friends (or people our age in general) have set. Simply put, as a 17 year old, you had never gone to a group of friends, boasting about how big your tomatoes have grown. Now, however, it's more about you than others and you don't have to hide the fact you have herbs growing on thewindow.

I'm not arguing about these things having a link to growing up, I just think these signs aren't quite as elaborate or "severe" as they look.

I have definitely hit the coffee stage. 6 months ago I would have sworn to you that I hated coffee, now I have at least one a day.

I couldnt stand being in the garden, id put off cutting the lawn as long as I could so I didnt have to go out there. Now me and my friends all grow things and experiment with them in our cooking and have even swapped recipe tips (mainly to do with Chillis and hot sauces). :|
