Singers that have blown you away

I'm always interested in vocalists, male or female, who have outstanding singing voices. And when I hear a vocalist hit a high note and keep it, I often say "That was amazing" out loud. I'm going to give an example of vocals that have really hit me like a bomb of pleasure.

I'll be predictable (See signature) and say that Tarja Turunen from Nightwish has, not once, not twice, but countless times knocked me off my feet in awe. Her live rendition of Phantom of the Opera starts off somewhat average, and builds up. Finally, at the end of the song, she hits a note so high I'm surprised every single window in Finland didn't immediately shatter. Here's the link before I get obsessed and go on and on:

I want to know what exact singer has amazed you, and with which song, be it studio or live. Also I want links to that song! And I don't just mean, 'they sing the song well, getting all the right notes'. What I want are those really breath-taking high notes, or notes held for inhumanely long periods of time.

Marilyn Manson... LOVE his voice, his style both visual and audio, he is very intellectual and has my thought pattern, his lyrics (Especially Mechanical Animals) blow me away.

Re: Singers that have blown you away

Well, I like David Bowie and Freddie Mercury (in the studio at least). Both have great tone, range and control of their voices. Not to mention being brilliant songwriters.

I also like Ian Moss (from Cold Chisel - get on it). The tone of his voice just has something... enchanting about it.

Bon Scott had one of the best voices. His voice is naturally high, but still really tough and manly. Jimmy Barnes (also of Cold Chisel) also has one of the greatest screaming voices ever.

I also really admire Mika's voice, only for his range and control. His songwriting is offensive to my ears though.

Re: Singers that have blown you away

I heard Oli Sykes (BMTH) and Joseph (Whatever his last name is, the clean vocalist from Devil wears Prada.)
And they are what inspired me to work on my screamo/squeal voice and my clean vocals respectively.

Am I not right in saying that screaming can actually seriously damage your vocal chords if you do it enough? If you damage your vocal chords by screaming, how are you going to perform clean vocals?

Re: Singers that have blown you away

^Only if you do it wrong, I only have a mediocre singing voice anyway, I have had it compared to Lacrimas Profundere but slightly lighter. And I like Lacriams buuuuut. Point is I don't have an epic voice and I don't scream full time anyway so I should be fine.

Re: Singers that have blown you away

Tighten your vocal cords and make a "Bleh" sound while tightening your vocal sords as much as possible, pig squealing is much easier, tighten you neck but allow enough room to where you can barely breath in, breath in and make noise at the same time, manuever your lips and tongue to manipulate the sound, it soudns complicated but it is quite easy.

Yes, it does sound VERY complicated. Singing just seems more pleasant to me than squealing or screaming.

Re: Singers that have blown you away

honestly, i'd say Freddie Mercury has the best vocals. i don't really listen to Queen anymore, but that guy is incredible both on and off stage.

Oli Sykes from Bring Me The Horizon.

High-Five tattooed on his hand, enough said.

These people blow you away? Haha.

If we're all just posting random people, I'll put forward Tay Zonday.

Re: Singers that have blown you away

Steve Perry, former lead singer for the band Journey. One of the greatest singers ever in my opinion.

His voice can only be described as "Majestic".

And of course, Jack Black. (The video exaggerates a little, but he's incredible)
