It's not Fable IV obviously, but it is still a Fable game. One that honestly has me pretty intrigued despite the controversial shift with it. The fact that the game is free-to-play means I won't have to worry about making a gamble if it's worth the price or not. I just download it and see how it goes.

One of the main positives for me is the cross-device play, I don't own an XB1 and it'll be a long time until I'll ever be able to afford/have one. So having this feature means I'll be able to play with everyone else here on my PC. I do wish I could still create or build my own character through choices, but the already existing characters seem interesting enough for me to try out. I never got to test out the beta builds so I've no idea just how truly enjoyable the gameplay really is (come on LH, throw me a bone here!), but from all I've seen it looks like it'll be pretty fun.

It's not the game I asked for and Lionhead is admittedly taking a risk with this, but with it being free and all I'm willing to at least see just what the heck this game truly has to offer.

I think it's worth taking a look to see where it goes.

One of my biggest concerns has to do with character creation. We've all played all kinds of games and have seen character creation (or choice in lieu of creation, or lack of choice or creation), and taking into account that no Fable titles do this in the same way twice, I'm a little worried about what they're going to do here.

One of the things I hate most, and has resulted in a number of games remaining unfinished and collecting dust on my shelf, is tying characters and attributes. How I want to look and how I want to play are two separate things, and I don't want to have to pick one or the other. They're both important. Maybe I want to look like this sorta rad ranger guy but I don't want to be a ranger guy because I'm a sword and shield guy, but the only sword and shield guy is a pretentious freckled ginger dwarf. This is what they're doing. Each hero is unique both in appearance and in what they can do. And I've no doubt they'll introduce premium heroes down the line as is what happens with freemium games.

The four heroes thing is getting to me. Specifically the number. There was a game that came out shortly before TLC hit PC. I liked it, it felt kinda Kotorvian. You picked a race and gender, which were independent of class. So I picked the biggest race and did my usual sword/shield/heavy tank thing. Six years go by and a sequel's put together. You pick one of four unique characters with fixed classes and no overlap. I went with the snobby prince charming type because he was the only sword and shield guy.

I know why they did this. It was so that they could have voiced playable characters. My opinion of that is something I've already voiced.

It's not the game I asked for and Lionhead is admittedly taking a risk with this, but with it being free and all I'm willing to at least see just what the heck this game truly has to offer.
I'm not sure it's the game anyone asked for.

For me, Fable should have been a super typical thinly veiled monomyth adventure type game where you start out as no one important, there's a big bad looming over the world, and you kill that big bad. Directed by Tim Burton, music composed by Danny Elfman, story and side stories adapted by Burton and Caroline Thompson from material sourced from a Brothers Grimm book of fairy tales, starring Johnny Depp. The closest thing to that was the original. Every step after that was in a direction I had not hoped for.

I'm sure everyone has their idea of what Fable should have been and I'm sure mine doesn't line up with that of too many others', but I doubt there's anyone who can look at any Fable game and say "that's exactly what I was wanting, expecting and hoping for." Risky, absolutely.

It looks enjoyable but I usually get bored of competitive games when I hit the peak of my performance. These days I play games to relax. I'll probably get sick of teammates yelling at me to stop running up to the trolls out the gate.

"Holiday 2015" will be over six weeks from Friday. Lionhead has said that it will be available to play during that time. I'm thinking that they're shooting for open beta. I'm sure to post here when the announcement comes :D
