If you're an avid follower of pre-release review scores for super anticipated titles, you've probably noticed the scattershot scores garnered by Final Fantasy XIII. Most critics' biggest complaint with the game is its linearity -- a qualm which the game's director, Motomu Toriyama, claims to be a hang-up that's native to Western audiences and reviewers.

During a recent interview with Xbox World 360 magazine (via CVG), Toriyama explained, "we think many reviewers are looking at Final Fantasy XIII from a western point of view." He later added, "when you look at most Western RPGs, they just dump you in a big open world, and let you do whatever you like... it becomes very difficult to tell a compelling story when you're given that much freedom."

I enjoy both linear and non linear games, if I want random extacy I will go non-linear, if I want story I go linear. I want story in FFXIII, that is the reason I play FF, I enjoy the music and storytelling more than anything.

Urm... Linear?

"it becomes very difficult to tell a compelling story when you're given that much freedom."

LMAO! Yeah, all Japanese games have amazing stories.

I dont see how they can criticise a game in the series for being linear, Final Fantasy games have always been linear. You have a set path from start to finish but side-step that path to do sub-quests and such but next main quest would be back on the path. So why criticise this now?

Reviewers need to start criticizing games on their own individual merits, not criticizing them based on what some other game has done and how they wish the game would be.

Very good point, wishing games were like other games sort of takes away the fun of games having individual qualities. Having every game have all the same good/bad points would make the genres go stale as no-one would be willing to try anything new.
