Want to play some Square Enix games?
Want to play them for free in your brower?
Now you can... well only currently 2 but they are updating the service with more soon. Whats the catch you say? There isnt... of course theres a catch, the recommended browser for this service is Google Chrome and you have to earn playtime on a game by watching ads.Though its not as painful as you may think, with each one minute ad you view earning you twenty minutes of play time, and you can collect sixty minutes of uninterrupted play. The ads also appear in loading screens, though you can always buy levels or even the whole game.
The 2 titles currently available in this service are Hitman: Blood Money and Mini Ninjas with more on the way...
I personally think its an interesting concept that goes a step further than simple demos, so if you have google chrome give it a try

So what's exactly new in all this? They make browser games with a slightly better quality using java to support it and it has to install things on your PC. The whole point of games in the browser is that you don't need anything more than one and perhaps two third party tools to run them. What's the point of installing their software and downloading the game when you can just buy it?

And also they want you to watch advertisements and to pay per level of each those games. I don't see anything new or good into all this, but it's Square Enix.

Free.

It may not interest you, but it will interest others.

If having to watch advertisements you call it "free" then you aren't really used to the modern internet.

I guess I should just stop trying to talk to you all together, yeah? You always have some debbie downer response to every single thing anyone says ever.

So, I'll just leave you with this:

Free (adverb): Without cost or payment.

I agree with you, they are essentially full retail games that you dont have to pay anything for but use a little time to view an ad. I hate ads in anything but I wouldnt mind a system like this so I could test some games before buying them. Makes a nice change from preset old build demos and you get to experience as much of the game as you want to see before buying it. Rather than basing your opinion on what might be the best section of the best level that a developer put into a demo to tempt you to buy the full game. Other companies have done it with browser games but rarely with full blown retail titles.

Square Enix is just throwing out advanced browser games when others have given you the ability to run retail games on your browser.

They are essentially retail games in a cloud gaming service with Tomb Raider and many others following soon after Hitman and Mini Ninjas. There are other services like it with OnLive and Gaikai being some examples but it works in a slightly different way and seems to go a step further than merely a browser game.

Essentially, the jargon-tastic sounding technology enables a web page to take full advantage of the 3D graphics hardware contained within a PC or Mac, allowing real-time rendering of visuals from inside the web page.

That means razor sharp graphics and, in theory, much lower latency than you would see with the OnLive and Gaikai cloud gaming solutions. Despite the software being seemingly skewed towards Google’s popular Chrome browser, Square-Enix has also said that by adapatating their own technology, they should be able to extend the same sort of functionality to Firefox and Internet Explorer browsers in the future.
