Re: Teachers strike

It was a pretty bad joke.... It didn't even make sense.

Re: Teachers strike

It was a wholly unpleasant joke to boot.

On the other hand, these tests is (might be) a good way of detecting trouble with some children's schooling while they're still young. In my previous school we had people who were 14 years old and barely could read, why? Because they had no pressure on them to learn anything because noone would test them!

The tests has its upsides and downsides, but I think the upsides weights more...
I understand the need to test children's abilities but my issue is they already know Jessica is struggling - they have said she won't pass these tests and have confirmed she has the abilities of a 4 year old. But they are doing NOTHING about it to help her - she's still being sent home with work she cannot complete, books she cannot read and writing she cannot manage. Then she gets in trouble for not doing it. Mental...

I know that all too well. When I was... about her age, I hated math (still do) so I slowly but surely fell behind. They didn't care... until it was time for my summer vacation. Had a very funny one, 'cause they sent me home with instructions to do just about the whole math book...:(

Feels....funny...telling you this, but one important thing to do is to give 'em hell. My mom went to my school bringin' fire and brimstone from hell itself and stirred things up, yelling at just about every teacher in her sight.

After that I got into special classes and such and caught up with the rest of the class.

Re: Teachers strike

If there is one thing I enjoy, it's raising hell with people who damn well deserve it. I have already told Jessica if she continues to be so upset over all this and call herself stupid and I see no improvement or even communication from her teachers I will be marching (well, limping) in there and going mental at whoever is responsible.

I've done it before when she was being bullied and the teachers ignored it - I went in there and said "Either you sort it or I will but your way would be legal."

I've told Jessica to not do her homework anymore and if she gets in trouble, I'll go in there and tell them exactly how they ought to be doing their job. I'm all of equal pay, but they are doing crap-all right now to help a child they KNOW is well behind. If she isn't capable of the work then fair enough and adjustments can be made. If she is behind because some lazy-*** teacher is focusing more on their smoking break and not on the kids then I will be causing so much trouble...

Example - she was sent home with a math sheet which said "you have bought three oranges for __pence. You had __pence to start with. How much is left over?" Tell me what is wrong with this homework and you get an imaginary gold star...

You go get em, Angel!

Depends on whether you've started eating them or not.

Re: Teachers strike

But seriously, does no one see what is wrong with that sentence? I have written it exactly as it says on the paper...

Re: Teachers strike

It doesn't give you the price for the oranges. Basically you can put whatever value you want!

Re: Teachers strike

Oh yeah! Stupid me. I was sitting there trying to find out what the missing link was.... Man I'm unobservant. If I had actually tried to do it, I would have seen it though.

Re: Teachers strike

The bottom of the sheet says "notes for parents - your child's teacher will have entered the correct amounts according to the child's individual ability". They put nothing in so what am I meant to do?

The whole sheet is like that - no values anywhere and no way of knowing what Jessica's ability is seeing as I AM NOT HER DAMN TEACHER. So she isn't doing the homework and if they have a problem with that they know where I am.

Oh, imaginary gold star for you, Tsuyu.

Wow, talk about commitment to your job. Really.

But you still have to answer. Whatever numbers you put there, the answer must still be correct. And you can`t put a bigger number in the second blank.
It makes sense, but still pointless and rather non-developing.

Or, you could answer - I bought 3 oranges for 50 pence (odd word), but I only had 1 pence so now I have to do slave labour for 1 pence an hour and repay my debt.

Re: Teachers strike

Will read rest later, but:

More money for teachers=good. My mom's one. Obviously, they should be paid several million a week.

Some teachers=evil. Such as the eighth grade Algebra teacher who told me she would flunk me if I didn't get out of the class.

I almost choked on my drink when I read that!

Yeah, I have no problem with doing this homework - my issue is with the fact that the figures were not put in like they said they were and I have no idea what Jessica can or cannot do in class so it is pointless me putting in the figures myself if they are going to be too hard or too easy for her. No point in asking her either because she'll blatantly lie :D

Figures it's Tsuyu who would misread "flunk" as something else.

And Drakan who would agree. Vision getting blurry again?

But no, although she did **** me over, she didn't use that word or meaning.

And, on the subject of standardized testing... it's evil. You do need to measure everyone's progress, but you can't just slap everyone to the same level. My mom teaches special ed, and they expect special ed to pass the same MSA as regular ed? What the hell.

So what's Jessica's issue, out of curiosity? Is it the math or the reading? Or both?

EDIT: MSA=Maryland State Assessment. Or Maryland School Assessment. Or something. It's the standardized test for middle and elementary schools in Maryland.

Re: Teachers strike

I agree that teachers are underpayed and sometimes overworked, and they need a bit more money to put up with all the crap they have to deal with. It's like getting paid next to nothing to go to a place populated by all flavors of annoying and evil to teach what doesn't generally want to be learned... well, it's exactly like that actually. I can't think of many jobs harder than being a teacher that pay that little, to be honest.

Re: Teachers strike

On the other hand, there are some useless teachers. And there are some good kids. There's balance to it all.

Yeah thats very true, some teachers just seem to not care about some of the kids who are falling behind and think its because they are not doing their work. They dont take into account that they are there to teach these kids how to do the work not just leave them to get on with it when they dont understand.
